Global mobile handset maker, Sony Ericsson launches its premium touch phone Xperia™ X1 in partnership with leading national operator, SK Telecom. The mobile Web communication and multimedia entertainment phone comes with customisable panel interface catering to the Korean market, and aims to provide local consumers with a premium smart-phone experience.

March 10, 2009 (Seoul) – Global mobile handset maker, Sony Ericsson today announced the launch of its business in Korea. It will cooperate with SK Telecom, its partner to launch the premium touch, arch-slider phone Xperia™ X1 which lets users choose from a dynamic range of activities at anytime and anywhere.

The innovative and unique, premium touch phone Xperia™ X1 is the world’s first arc-slider multimedia phone, and meets the demand for personalised mobile web communication and multimedia entertainment with style.

The Xperia™ X1 brings you the all-in-one solution in a single user-friendly yet stylish device that fits nicely in your pocket; whether you want to reply your work emails while watching the latest action movie on the train or check in with your friends on their plans for the weekend while reading through a PowerPoint document for a presentation.

The stylish multimedia Xperia™ X1 which runs on Windows Mobile® 6.1 brings personalisation to a new level. By allowing you to access information and applications the way you like through a customisable easy-to-use graphical panel interface, you will be able to tailor-make how you want information to be presented or even choose which items you want easy access to!

“Our vision for the Xperia™ X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile web communication and multimedia entertainment in a distinctive stylish design,” said Hirokazu Ishizuka, Corporate Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific Region of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. “Customised panel interface on the Xperia™ X1 means that our customers will be able to live their lives to the fullest by enjoying the premium experience of energised communications in their own way.”

Encased in a full stainless steel body, the stylish handset sports a roomy 3-inch clear WVGA display to bring your content to life from enjoying your favourite movie in cinematic-like DVD quality on the 3 inch WVGA screen to working efficiently with Microsoft® Windows Mobile® platform on-the-move. For quick typing, the Xperia™ X1 slides open to present the world’s first arc-slider design, revealing a wide pitch full QWERTY keypad.

Entering the Korean market

To launch the Xperia™ X1 with Windows Mobile® and a WIPI Platform, Sony Ericsson Korea cooperated with SK Telecom, the distributor of the product, to customize the X1 in consideration of the local Korean customers. The result was the development of three new panels - “My smart panel,” “DAUM panel” and “My PC panel” and the localization of the “SPB panel” in Korean for the local user’s convenience. The sales of the Xperia™ X1 will start within March.

“My smart panel” is a wireless Internet service for smart phones developed by SKT, which provides users easy access to online services including mail, messenger and internet browsing. “DAUM panel” is a customized service by Sony Ericsson which gives users instant access to services found on the DAUM portal, such as mail, web search and T-story whilst “My PC panel” allows users to experience ubiquitous and individualized media services by connecting the mobile to the content and software of a PC through WiBro. In addition, the “SPB panel” is a great panel which gives quick finger-friendly access to everything you need in a second.

Specific to the Korean market, additional components and accessories including a battery with charger, a 4G micro SD card installed with the movie Spiderman 3 will accompany every purchase of the Xperia™ X1. The first 1,000 customers will get their names engraved on their X1 and a luxurious leather phone case for free, making it truly personalized.

“We are very excited to establish Sony Ericsson’s presence in Korea and firmly believe that we have the right product to offer to Korean consumers,” said Hirokazu Ishizuka, Corporate Vice President and Head of the Asia Pacific region. “Working closely with our strategic partner, SK Telecom, we will build the Sony Ericsson brand awareness and increase our mindshare within the marketplace.”

“Xperia™ X1 is truly a personalized phone which offers smart-phone users an innovative yet premium mobile multimedia experience,” said Youn-hee Han, Head of Sony Ericsson Korea. “Worldwide, it is the first time that the Xperia™ X1 has been customized with four panels to suit a local market needs, and it is a clear indication of Sony Ericsson’s commitment to the market.”

"As the strategic partner for Xperia™ X1, we are honoured to support the launch of Sony Ericsson in Korea, and to mark this milestone in the local telecommunications industry. With its full touch, unique customizable panel interface, we believe Xperia™ X1 will prove to be popular with sophisticated Korean mobile phone users,” said Joon Dong Bae, Executive Vice President of SK Telecom.

Additionally, over 60 SK Network and Sony Korea service centres and contact centre(Call Center:1588-4170) have been set up to support the after-sales service for Xperia™ X1.
