I think I'm leaving SE after 10yrs+ |

I've been a long time lurker on here since I was looking around for my current phone (W800) 4yrs ago. I've been looking to upgrade since late of 2007 following announcement of 1st Fruit phone. I was sure that SE after all their years head start on touch screens had to be able to come up with something close to it even if not as good as UI - wise but would have 3g better Camera etc after all my brother had P800 and P900.
I'm in UK and my phone history is:- GF788, I888, T28 world, Moto Timeport (I know, but my T28 packed up and there were none available and was only other Intnl capable phone - fortunately it got nicked), T68i and most recent W800.
I'm not on O2 and I don't want to switch to them from my current carrier (who are poo but work better for me overseas on price) so current iPhone is out.
I'm looking for a phone to offer me decent - excellent internet access as I would like to do some trips without PC and I currently feel the best way to offer this on phone sized devices is with a touchscreen . Cam is nice and I've taken some pretty nice snaps on my W800 but the emphasis is just that - "snaps" to take real pics I get a proper camera out. I really quite want large screen, GPS and mapping, music player (duh) but not too fussed about video, calendar (run my diary on my phone. I obviously want email access and would like to be able to look at office docs but that's not vital and I don't write huge volumes of, or very lengthy messages on a very regular basis i.e. not enterprise level . On the other hand it must have easy SMS messaging that I can even use walking down the street with one hand (one of iphone's big let downs). Must have HSDPA and Wifi (to cut down on data bills abroad). Would like to install my own apps (book readers etc.) not too fussed about buying music online as I tend to rip my own. I've used/borrowed my brother's win mobile devices and really didn't get on with it the interface being very unintuitive practically requiring me to stop and think every time I replied to a SMS
I started looking around in late 2007 early 2008 and there's plenty of rumours of SE super-phone coming imminently and indeed I'm expecting not only SE but Nokia and Samsung (eventually) to come up with something to get close to iphone use experience quality and surpass it on it's technical weaknesses and what do we get - nothing, zip. So MWC 2008 announce X1, interesting but Win Mobile still sucks for non enterprise users (in fact it always sucks but it's worth the compromise to some users) and they're all the same any start up can bang one out however I'll wait and see how these active panels which sound quite interesting workaround turn out . And the G900/G700 sound interesting particularly emphasis on this notes thing but they are on very old platform which is OK cos they're going to be cheap, however where's the high end non Windows flagship (same for all the OEMS) hmmmm. Maybe I'll wait a bit. Oooo exciting rumours of Paris super phone then see some pics - interseting. Touchscreen, not personally keen on the P1 stylee keyboard but it's a choice, hang on tho is it still on the same crappy old hardware and may not have HSDPA. Then where are G900/G700? in UK no sign at all, by the time they stumble into stores there's rumours about demise of UIQ and still no Paris. Well not going to buy a smart phone on a platform that is about to be dropped, then the X1 starts dragging out meanwhile HTC's been there seen it done it and got 2 models to market (just how SE managed to take from Feb to October to get a Windows phone made by the manufacturer of 85% of Win phones onto the market I have no idea) and the panels aren't active just a crappy shortcut on a horrible operating sysytem. Please note how successful the panels have been despite SDK last year nothing at all apart from original 5 or so until Sony announce whole 4 new ones at this years MWC - I'd say dead in the water and apart from 3-4 still mostly pointless.
The failure of the G series was a shame as I thought quick note concept that could be copied into calendar later was pretty compelling but the hardware was sadly out of date and disgracefully SE have removed them from their UK web site, talk about lack of back up - not bitching but doesn't give positive feeling of support for whatever model you buy, yeah we'll support it but only if it turns out popular. Errr OK I'll wait then.
So SE spends 112 months banging out feature phone after feature phone which if I'd wanted I'd have got back in early 2007 (where's the progress?), frankly none of them seem to offer a significantly better feature set than my W800 with 4Gb card.
Then at this year"s MWC which I'd hung on til, we get W995 which is nice and all and probably the best of the feature phones they'll make, 18months ago cool, now meh and the ultimate in marketing b*ll*cks a phone that doesn't even exist - "trust us we'll have out in H2 this year". If you can't get a Windows phone subcontracted to world's largest WinMo OEM onto market inside 8 months and in fact there were none off contract until Dec in London stores (my bro bought one) and couldn't get two ancient UIQ rehashes onto UK market and canceled all highend products for 12months well I think I probably won't wait around thanks.
I quite like look of Samsung OmniaHD but not sure their bolt ons looks so great Nokia N97 nice but expensive compared to 5800and bit bulky possibly (same for Sammie) nd both not out 'til summer. Also Voda Andorid jobbie is a possible but stuck with stupid HTC headphone jack and still work in progress I think (6 months to get soft keyboard out!). After 18 months I'm bored waiting so looks like Nokia 5800 for me - no it's not the best but I think it's the best compromise and at a great/compelling price even for an upgrade (don't like upgrading often - can't be bothered to learn new s'ware). Whilst S60 -5th isn't a great touch UI (Rip UIQ) I like what Nokia are trying to do with Ovi, it seems to offer the best challenge to the genius of Apple's`App store and that's good coz Apple seem to be on tipping point of domination - most who use it and have invested in Apps will not leave Apple and let's see what they bring this summer. If SE aren't in the game soon i think the train will have left, sad after all this time and previous great innovation. |

Your analysis is spot-on, sadly. SE aren't worth waiting around for anymore, if they couldn't get the X1 right then the Idou doesn't stand a shadow of a chance. Combine that with the way they've treated customers generally and you've got a company that's really not what it was or should be.
The 5800 should do the job for you if you really can't/won't change operators (and you don't want to get into the unlocked/unsubsidised market). Otherwise, I'd have to say the iPhone seems like what you're really after... Apple have got it right, world domination or not, and you can text one-handed with a bit of practice too.

If a smartphone is what you want, go for Samsung, or Nokia. Btw, the X1 is not half as bad as these guys try to portay it. Its the best WinMo running mobile present and will continue to do so for some time. |

There's absolutely no basis for saying the X1 is the best WinMo phone now, let alone in the future. Its guts are the same as a half a dozen other HTC handsets, the Touch HD has a better screen, the Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 are just about to launch and will have a free official upgrade to WM6.5... the X1 is just another also-ran, outdated from the day it was launched.

I don't blame you. You can try to leave but unfortunately we're all cursed.

Well I think that mostly I888, T28, R380, T68, K750/W800 pushed development significantly in comparison to available rivals. And R380 thru P1 is a would've, could've, should've, one that got away. Bit like Psion really - ironic Epoc users.
Since P900 and horrible P990 attempt and K800 I agree mostly dull stuff |

good one. . . .

If video is not realy a must then id say get the iPhone3G, but 5800xm is an excellent choice, although personaly i think NOKIA could have put in slighty better hardware, like a GPU, but if things like that dont matter to you then go for it.

I leaved a couple of weeks ago, jumped the fence to the dark side (nokia).
Got a N85 i'm happy with, build quality could be better, but performance and applications wise it's great.
One thing i hope SE will understand soon, is to put 3.5mm adapter on all their phone. I have to say i miss the fastport on my N85 so i could use a craddle charger, but 3.5mm adapter is more important to me.
A fastport on the bottom for charging/data and a 3.5mm adapter on top, every phones need that.
I already dismissed the Idou as a potential phone for me, just because of that. |

Hello, but perhaps you can try something different? If you want to browse the Internet in a fair screen without compromising usability with small screen, you can get a cheap netbook (about 8.9" size screen, at about 300-400 USD) which all come with wifi, and for 3G, get something like a G502, with 3G, EDGE, GPRS, and you can use it as a modem. It also runs with the latest interface from Sony Ericsson and it has a very affordable price, although camera is standard without auto-focus. Perhaps a T650 or K770 which has a nice camera.

mmm... I agree about the SE's lack of 'anything exciting' ...but the new s60 from SE, the Idou, seems to be promising. If you're lookin for a new and innovative SE - that could be it for you. Just have to wait until the 3rd Q though.
cheers!

Whats so innovative with Idou? I see it as a 5800 with better camera but missing 3.5mm jack.. |

@snoFlake
I agree with Boing, change operators and get the iPhone 3G.
Otherwise, the 5800 is the next closest thing until the Idou arrives later this year. |

It's very funny to hear ya saying 5800 is so nice!!
I always had SE phones and now the 5800xm...ok it has touch 3.2'' screen...but it''s still have many bugs, this screen is awfull outside(usable only indoors),the plastic materials are cheap,it's slow, the camera of 3mp act like the k700 camera...!!!
Yes I missed SE quality phones,I wanted the C905 but because of many factory problems I will wait for the Idou(or w995) and meanwhile get rid of nokia and get the LG arena which seems more fun
