Pc Startup with External hardrive |

I plugged my external hardrive in (Western Digital 1TB) the other day and closed down my pc. Now today, I have started the Pc, only for it to freeze on the black screen. Now it says Auto detecting mass storage device, but thats where it stops.
Can anyone shed any light on this, as I thought I could just leave this plugged in, so it just came on with my Pc, and shutdown with my Pc.
I deleted the software which came with the HDD when I plugged it in.

have you made sure that the bios has the (internal) HDD set 1st in the boot order?

I have seen this before. Some PC's wont boot with a USB storage device plugged in. My last PC did that. Never found a cure.

Tried to go into the Bios, to select the internal hardrive to boot from (F12) but the popup window doesn't come up until after the window where its freezing.

I'll bet you a tenner that it does it with a USB memory stick too. My desktop PC (same processor + similar spec) does!
It's a BIOS issue; upgrade to the latest version (if there is one) if you really can't live with it. I've never bothered to look for one myself, since it's not a good idea to leave USB drives permanently connected anyway. One component failure in the PSU or Motherboard and you could loose the lot.
And before any of you wannabe arsey geeks on here start arguing the point (as seems to happen every time that I take the time to try and help somebody on here lately); I've seen external drives die in this way with my own eyes in a workshop environment.

@jcwhite uk, thanks very much for confirming this, thought I was going mental.
@cycovision, your absolutely correct, tried a USB stick, and that too has issues, but you didn't win a tenner, sorry.
Thanks guys, as always, knew I could rely on the experts on Esato.
Thanks Paul

@Cyco
This is going to sound really really stupid, but does the same apply to FireWire?
I have my ext. HDD plugged in permanently through FW800, so it powers on and off with my computer, but its main power source is through the mains.
Is there the same element of risk in doing that too?
