Just got a G502, and I noticed that when I remove the battery even for a few seconds, the time and date gets reset to 01-Jan-2000 00:00.

Is that normal for this phone or is my backup/"CMOS" battery faulty?

That's not a fault, when you turn off your phone, the slightest bit of battery is used to store your, time, date etc. This is called Real Time Clock, turn on your phone, and go into service menu.

Make sure you are on the home screen
Press right
Press *
Press left

Press *

Then go to service tests, then Real time Clock (RTC)

Thats a test for it

The service screen shows the Real Time Clock is OK.

So it's normal for the phone to reset the date and time when I remove the battery?

On my K700 and K850, this is not happening. Time and date will be stored even if I remove the bettery for several days.
