"A four-year-old girl remains critically ill after being thrown from Melbourne's West Gate Bridge into the water below, allegedly by her father.

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses to the incident shortly after 9am (AEDT) on Thursday morning.

A man, aged about 35, was arrested just over an hour later outside the Federal Court building in central Melbourne with two other children in his car.

Homicide Detective Inspector Steve Clark said a white Toyota Landcruiser stopped in an in-bound lane of the bridge about 9.10am (AEDT).

"A male in that vehicle has taken a young girl ... and dropped her over the bridge and she's landed in the water," Det Insp Clark told reporters at the scene below the bridge.

Two other children, believed to be aged six and eight, were also in the car at the time but were unharmed, he said.

Water police reached the injured girl in the Yarra River within 10 minutes of the fall. She was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to the Royal Childrens Hospital in a critical condition.

A Hawthorn man, believed to be the child's father and allegedly responsible for throwing the child from the bridge, was spotted with the Landcruiser and the two other children near the Federal Court in the CBD about 10.30am.

He was taken into custody and will be interviewed by police.

The victim's mother had been informed of the situation, Det Insp Clark said.

A forensic team remains below the bridge where the child was retrieved from the water.

A crime scene has been established to investigate the fall, estimated to be more than 50 (58 to be exact) metres, from near the middle pylon of Melbourne's largest bridge.

Police units are also still at the Stony Creek backwash area.

Det Insp Clark told reporters the arrested man was involved in some ongoing family court issues.

"There have been some ongoing family court matters as I understand it between the father and his wife," he said.

Det Insp Clark told reporters it appeared no witnesses had an opportunity to intervene during the incident.

"It's all happened fairly quickly, as I understand it, nobody had the opportunity.

"He's got straight out of the car, taken the young girl and walked to the edge of the bridge."

@tranced

there was a hand written note from the father:

Note

A handwritten note found in the home of Mr Freeman yesterday spoke of "keeping a clear head".

"You have a big fight on your hands and by no stretch of the imagination will it be easy," the note read.

Doctors and paramedics fought to save the little girl but she died from massive internal injuries about four hours after she was pulled from the river by water police. It is alleged she had plunged nearly 60m.

Mr Freeman was too mentally disturbed to appear in court late yesterday, which was told he was on suicide watch. The Hawthorn IT consultant was remanded in custody until May 21.

Acting Det-Sgt Damian Jackson told the court a forensic medical officer described Mr Freeman as being in an acute psychiatric state.

"The forensic medical officer had concerns he was suicidal and could self harm."

Defence lawyer Elanor Peattie said Mr Freeman told her he was content to be dealt with "in his absence".

im shocked there are no barriers up though on this bridge yet. approx 18 people commit suicide on it. never shows on the news though since the media arent allowed to show it.

here's a pic of the bridge which, btw, has a bit of history because when it was being built, part of it collapsed killing 35 workers (link)

I've been over it endless times and its really quite impressive.

btw, there's a similarly tragic story in London where a man taking his 3 year old to the hospital to see his wife and their new baby got stabbed and killed in Croydon.

What is this world coming to?

I'm sorry... but i can't believe your words!!!
Apparently you excuse this animal, you just criticize him because "someone would see him"!??!

So if he did this, guaranteeing that no one would see him do it would be ok!?!?!?

its one of our busiest roads in melbourne. so plenty of people saw it happen.

but he drove straight to the magistrates court because he had a hearing that day or something. he was arrested almost instantly.
