Sony Ericsson has struck a deal with Universal Music Publishing to allow the publisher’s artists to promote their music on SE’s online and phone-based service for up-and-coming acts PlayNow Uncut. Under the terms of the agreement, which was announced at Midem, SE has access to master recordings. Artists, meanwhile, will give up licensing payments. They will be able to earn money from their music if fans chose to buy their tracks from SE’s PlayNow Arena music service. So is this a deal in which artists basically forgo payments in favor of hopefully getting exposure? SE spokesperson Matthias Holm told us that the service would hopefully give artists a place to be discovered and land them a label deal. SE head of content Martin Blomkvist told Billboard.biz, “It is not to say no one gets paid. People will get paid at the appropriate time and at appropriate rates,” that is, when fans opt to buy tracks off of the PlayNow Arena.
