I've never really used the GPS in my C905 but I figure it could be useful on my trip to Canada next month.

The thing is, from playing around with it a little it appears to download everything from the internet in real time. I was wondering if there's any way to download maps onto the memory card in advance so I don't need to use data (which will be expensive if even possible abroad) when using it.

As far as I understand, C905 is shipped with google maps, which does not have the ability to pre-load maps. Like wayfinder, (that also comes with C905 in Sweden under certain conditions), it downloads maps on the fly, which indeed will become expensive, especially if you travel abroad.

You would have to seek and find another application that can use the built-in GPS receiver. Unfortunately, I don't know of any such program.

On phones with the Symbian platform, like W950i, you could use TomTom Navigator, for example.

Google maps uses both radio and GPS for positioning. If the phone has a GPS device, google maps will use it, otherwise, it will use the positioning from the GSM antenna locations.

It would be really good if someone really clever and smart would create a concise map-pack for trekbuddy and upload it with torrents.

I tried Amaze, Nav4All, Wayfinder & Trekbuddy...
The results are that with Amaze and Nav4All you have the navigation "free" but the downloading of the maps is a pain (expensive and slow if you haven't 3G coverage)...
Trekbuddy has free maps but personally if found it not intuitive, e.g. the menu, the waypoints system etc + plus you have to make the maps and if you want zoom that's another thing (creation of atlas)...
So the soution could be Wayfinder, which you have to pay for... With pre-loaded maps you have to download from the net only 50kb ca. per hour...

Amaze will be offering downloadable maps shortly, in V5.
