Hello
I was thinking to replace my ''old'' k850(I am tired of BROD and small screen) with a samsung omnia but after reading the bads of the omnia screen I am tempted to buy a used Iphone (not 3G) of course unlocked and jailbroken,my choice is finally the iphone or the G705 (I know it's different but the g705 is sooo sexy).
The Iphone with old FW was not very interesting 1 year ago,but now with FW 2.1+ it's totally changed and video recording is possible via third party softwares, the only thing that tickles me is that I wouldn't be able to pair it with my new samsung P2 (so I can ski without missing a call),anyway the G705 is still not available in my country and will not be before perhaps 2 months!!
So if I am not happy with the Iphone I can resell it and take a G705 when available,AM I DOING THE RIGHT CHOICE???
The cell shop will take the K850 at 125$ and sells me the used Iphone for 325$,so only 200$ to pay

NB:I don't have 3G network here and I don't care about GPS(it's cool but I can live without it)

Hi there,

I was in a similar situation last week..

I wanted a iPhone 3G but couldn`t get it at a good price.. So i went for a used iPhone (1.gen).

First thing i did was upgrade to 2.2, jailbreak and personalized it a bit..

I asure you (if you like iphones.. i had lots of them) you will not regreat your decision..

I think that iPhone 3G is not worth extra 200-300€,.. I find Edge in first iPhone fast enough, don`t need GPS like you said,..

And on the good side.. iPhone 1 should have better battery life considering lacking GPS, 3G,..
Having used both,.. i find iPhone 1 way better looking than 3G.. But i guess that is a matter of personal taste..

Did i make your decision any easier?

Greetings, David.

Thank you!
About battery life does it last for 2-3 days or it's like the horrible N95 battery?

Well, i guess it depends on what are you doing on it (and for how long).. I have SSH and Wi-Fi turned off when i dont need it..

I use my iPhone mostly for texting (sms, mail, msn, facebook,..). On my way to work i listen to music and text (2hrs a day), i surf a little and watch some video.. I consider that quite a heavy usage.. (Haven`t mentioned i also make a few calls)

My phone lives 1 whole day and next morning for mails & chat @ coffe. If you are talking about light usage.. i think it should last 2 days easy.. if not more.

I saw it today at the shop, software seems ok but it has lot of scratches on the screen and at the back
I don't know if it's possible to change the whole casing(back and front) and how much it cost(non original like for Nokias??)

It isn't very easy to customize iPhone's with new casings which is why there aren't as many cases for sale as the Nokia kind of phones despite it being a popular phone. What people do is change the colour of the original casing using paint jobs. Like here: http://www.colorwarepc.com/p-161-iphone-3g.aspx

The 3G is even harder as the logic board is attached to the inside of the back case. The 2G one is slightly easier but still not easy like Nokia's. Don't forget that the 2G battery is soldered to the logic board to make things even more difficult.

Ok
I asked a cell repair shop about it,they can change the back cover with original one for 50$ which seems fair, for the screen scratches however...they have to change the LCD because it's a monoblock!!!
Cost easily 130$!!!!!
I have read meanwhile that scratches can be taken out from screen with some ''home solutions'' like Toothpaste, brasso, even wet sand paper for heavy scratches...
But if none if those solutions is a real solution I will stick to my K850 till a new interesting phone comes out

If i were you i would personally leave that particular iPhone in the shop! The condition sounds too bad and it isnt worth spending out the extra to get the housing fixed, let alone the cost to get the screen sorted out. None of the supposed home solutions to rid the scratches will work to a satisfactory level either, you'll end up making it look worse.

You should probably just keep hold of your K850 and save your money and wait for the G705 if thats what you've got your eye on. Or wait for a better condition iPhone to arrive in the shop
