Virgin Media broadband speeds up

Virgin Media is widely expected to unveil a 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) domestic broadband service today.

It doing so it will be the first UK ISP to roll out a next generation broadband service that runs far faster than most others available to UK web users.

So far no word has been given on pricing or which parts of the country will be the first to get it.

Currently, the fastest domestic broadband speed available from Virgin Media is 20Mbps.

Its no use having 50mb broadband if your going to be throttled, in no time at all. I am on 4mb, and get throttled to high heaven.

Some questons answered here.

It certainly isn't cheap however I think you are more likely to get something like the speed you are paying for with cable.

In the article mentioned theres a reference to the usage of DOCSIS 3.0 standard.
This means these 50Mbps connections are cable connections, not ADSL nor fiber optic...

ADSL tops at 24Mbps (with ADSL2+)
So from the copper wiring you will only get this, unless operators start deploying VDSL hardware, which would the be able to get near 100Mbps. [addsig]

Trev, I think so. In the UK it's absolutely s****. Virgin, can you give us our full 10MB us users ask for and then release bigger MB's. It;s like you don't give a crap about us.
