Does album artwork have to be in the ID3 tag for it to show, or can you just put a jpeg in the same folder as the songs?

It's redundant and a big waste of space to have each mp3 contain a copy of the image.

The album art should be in the same place as the songs.

I update the album info via Windows media player and put the album art and then copy the songs (just copy & paste) to the m2 card ...vola media player in my K660i shows the album art properly

I've placed album art in the same folder, usually named "folder.jpg" or "cover.jpg" the same way it works for winamp. Doesn't using iTunes or WMP encode the jpeg right into the file? As posted, that seems redundant. Is there a way to just put a single image file for an entire album rather than having each mp3 encoded with the artwork? The files I use are always small, square and in the same directory but they don't seem to show.
