Hey there, can somebdy explain how the gps maps work on c905 or any new phone really...

Do you have to connect to the internet to use the function (i.e google maps)

Or are the maps pre loaded....i dont have a god tariff for internet usage, so gps would bepontless for me if you had to use internet.

Advice please?

The maps are downloaded as you use them. Google Maps will cache a certain amount of what it has downloaded that session for use in that session only (the cache is cleared upon closing the program). It is quite data intensive. I'm not sure if there are any available pre-loaded gps navigation apps available for the C905 (or other SE non-smartphone). I believe the pre-installed wayfinder app downloads the maps too.

Get a tomtom or a good data package.

I wish google maps would not clear the cache on exiting.. it didn't use to. I have an 4GB memory stick I am happy for it to use as much as it needs.

Why the hell cannot someone release a decent preloaded map tomtom/garmin type software? I would pay good money. GoExplore is not worth it considering amAze is free.

Hold on, I went on a walk to Scafell Pike earlier in the year and a mate of mine who has a N95 put Memory Maps on it. So that will work too.

I'll get more details from him tommorrow and report back here with some more information.

Using offline maps has got to be the way to go... if you are out for any period of time (we were 11 hours on our walk) a constant data connection would cane the battery.

Come on people, let's get a nice workable solution, preferably with zoom (trek buddy doesn't do that, you have to have different scaled maps). If you have used memory maps you'll know about the 3d fly through, I want that on my SE when I'm walking up Ben Nevis please!

Why do people still seem to think preloading Wayfinder maps with C905 isn't possible? It is if you have a paid subscription. Just use Wayfinder's maploader tool. The maps have to be downloaded to the same drive (c: or e:) as the navigation software itself.

I'm not sure it works under trial. You may have to actually initiate a paid for subscription.

Yes, It seems works with trial.. but a question where put the maps on becouz it create 66_15.wfd >> etcs files are between 7- 9 megs, there is lot of these files..

When it updates from Wayfinder maploader its loads to >filemanger>other.

It's same for you.. or do you move them to folder Wayfinder??
If not wrong it still connect to the internet when use it, but date will be reduced alot

The somewhat limited phone memory is the disadvantage when it comes to preloaded maps on the C905. You cannot move the Wayfinder app to memstick either, if I remember correctly.

Actually I have only downloaded maps, not really used them since I haven't had the need yet. Does it seem to work when they are placed in "other" folder?

Yes, Wayfinder will still download a small amount of data when navigating with preloaded maps.

I was wrong earlier, my friend had a downloaded and subscribed to service called View Ranger. He bought maps for it separately (he bought a pack of national parks).

My C905 does not have wayfinder on it, I debranded it (from UK Orange) to the latest generic Western Europe and it came with google maps and CPW Navigator on it.

I still have an old PDA, it's an Acer with a built in GPS receiver. I installed Tom Tom on this and it worked superbly. I exported maps from Memory maps to it and this was successful too.

Now on to the point I would like to make.

The C905 has a built in GPS receiver. It also has the facility for plenty of storage on the memory stick. I do not necessarily want directions, but I do want a navigation system that utilises preloaded maps with a zoom in and out feature that communicates with the GPS without any requirement for external data connection.

This must be possible, it's 2008!
