It's prohibited in Belgium to sell locked phones, so all phones officially imported in Belgium are factory unlocked, including iPhones.
Afaik there are some other countries, where they also sell factury unlocked iPhones.

Iphones have always been locked.
If they are selling it unlocked, then it is jailbroken.

Well, I don't know very much about iPhones, a few friends of mine bought some unlocked ones in Belgium as no shop or network, including Apple, is allowed to sell a locked phone in Belgium.
The iPhones Apple are selling in their own stores shouldn't be jail-broken, I suppose.

Sorry mate but that's completely incorrect - Apple sell the iphone unlocked in Hong Kong via there own website - read the text under the phones:

Australia do! Well they come locked but the network officially unlock them for you free of charge for contract phones. Or for a fee if bought on pre-paid (PAYG)

I had one for sale here not long ago.

Can get more if need be.

Yup. Italy, HK, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium... and a few more.

There's a link on the Apple site that says which countries carry unlocked phones.

I can get hold of a Hong Kong version of this factory unlocked phone. Can anyone confirm if I will be able to update this to newer firmware versions without problems in the UK?

Someone told me that it will only allow me to update it if i am based in Hong Kong as once it realises I am in the UK it wont let me update due to contract restrictions with 02!

@ Masseur - sorry dude. I found the link a few days ago, but couldn't seem to re-navigate to it.

@ Anuj - My unlocked handset is from Italy and I managed to upgrade to 2.2 with no problems at all.

BUT I've read stories where people's handsets have been lockec up again after the 2.2 update.

Another problem, and speaking from personal experience, with getting a handset from abroad is that should anything go wrong with it you would have to send it back to the country of origin - which can be very very expensive and time consuming as you have to pay for postage there and back again!

That's weird - so they dont have a "worldwide 12 months warranty" then?
