Yo,
I've been given by a current employee of a company a Lenovo X61 that was told to get rid of, so it's ended up with me...
not being a windows man, I don't really know what I'm doing..
anyway..
as soon as I start it up it asks for a pointsec username and pw.. this is not available..
any ideas how I go about getting past it? disabling it etc etc..
obv I don't mind losing everything on the lappy as it serves no use to me whatsoever...
So can anyone give me any pointers?
Ta!

haven't heard anything about that pointsec thing. probably it's a software installed on that "lappy". go to start, control panel, add remove programs.
or cant you even log in?

From what I understand Pointsec is an encryption program that runs even before windows. the best solution is to remove the hard drive from the machine and format it on another computer. then reinstall windows on the HD.

Press the Access IBM/Thinkvantage button as soon as the screen lights up. Get in to the BIOS, change settings to boot from the CD and do a fresh install.

Take out that weiner battery (forgot its name) inside, so it resets the BIOS, and then you might be able to get rolling from there.
If it's not even getting into Windows, then try booting up from something like a Ubuntu LiveDisc, and if it still wants this password, do the BIOS reset.

Ahh, it's an X, is it? Did you get an extension dock with it?
Arien was referring to the CMOS battery btw.
I think jcwhite's solution is the easiest. Buy an external 2.5" HDD shell for a fiver, plug that lil bugger in and fire away.

Resetting the BIOS would get rid of the password, not Pointsec. Booting into Windows is out out the picture. Booting from a Live disc isn't possible since the X61 does not have a built-in CD drive. |

I understand taking the HDD and formatting it, that's no issue, my issue then lies with BIOS.. being a Lenovo X61, it would appear that removing the bios battery doesn't reset the bios as it's stored in an amtel chip and the only way to get the password is to basically create a dump file.
Or am I going nuts here? resetting the bios is fine but apparently removing the battery doesn't do it?

Afaik on newer thinkpads like the X61 there are 2 ways to remove the BIOS password. One involves soldering and a prom programmer and the other option is to get a new motherboard.
