Is there any risk of permenant damage from installing and running java applications on the phone? A few look interesting to me and I would appreciate any feedback anyone can offer from their experience with them

no there is no danger, they are just .jar files and dont make any changes to the phones internal settings or anything, you can install and uninstall as much as you like
