camera phones: Old High-end vs. new mid-low range |

This is something i've been wondering for awhile but i can't find out myself.
The S700i, k750i, k800i were to my knowledge the earlier phones of their megapixel generation, were flagship phones and they all received stunning reviews as far as their cameras were concerned. Nowadays reviewers will just "pft" at <2.0mp resolution cameras bt hw do most of the newer midrange phones compare?
I recall gasping and going green with envy when i saw first the s700i's camera back in like 2004-2005 but how do run-off the mill el' cheapo 2008 1.3mpx phones compare?

My last proper cam phone before the C905 was the K800i and its not as good as the C905 but I had still been using it as a digital camera for a while instead of the camera on either my W880 or iPhone.
Its decent but compared to my C905 its lacking. |

Back to the OP's question: today's budget phones with cheap 1 or 2 MP cameras lack autofocus so these are still behind the S700 and the K750.

I agree they are behind the S700, which had a reasonable quality ccd, but it didn't have auto-focus. K750 was the first with AF.
The smallest MP available in low end consumer digicams is now 3-4MP anyway, so it's not possible to make a comparison on MP.
However the cheapest of cheap digicams have very poor quality and imho I'd take the S700 over them anyday.

Wasn't the OP talking about low-mid range camphones?

Well, lets think: S700 vs. T280/W350/W380/Z555(all 1.3mp(non-AF??))
S=2.3" QVGA 262k : Others <2.0" 176x220 262k
S=QCIF video(24/5fps) : Others NONE
S=quality(from P-series) loudspeaker : Others std avg quality(no depth)
S=led light(sprung switch/also keylock ) : Others NONE
S=Unique CCD processing sw(too tech to put here) : ALL Other SEs cut-down CMOS sw
Plenty more to consider too, japanese build/materials, browsing bluetooth, and all-round great ergonomics(as size wasn't an issue at the time)......
 p990i(r6d), n82-1(20.0.062) * treat people as you expect to be treated! * a-zott platinum/tttt in ~3 years... rip expanded call lists! |

Sorry my bad.
In that case, well, the S700 is defo better than my W910 (both non-AF). My K750 was better in some respects than my K800, but overall the K800 is better.
However pretty much any current camphone with less than 2MP is pretty crap. If it has less than 2MP in todays market then it's obvious the OEM has only tacked the camera on as an after thought. I would pit my K750 against any 2MP or less on the market today. I would pit a S700 against any current non-AF of less than 3MP.
Most camphones now has 3MP or more.

Ok, that's it! You convinced me! I'm going to myself an S700!

Owned 3, myself(first one was my 2nd SE ever, after K700)... ...and my current one(04W48 ) still gets pulled out, to prove the above, and more points, on rather regular occasion(I've only just stopped running one as a spare device too, only replaced by Z800(and not for cam!))...and won't ever go anywhere, either......

Nice comparision, but how's the image quality from say K750i (2mp, af, flash) compared to something like C702 (3.2mp, af, flash)? |

C702 is better overall. K750 does excellent daylight pics with perfect colour. Also does excellent macros. But there is some grain on K750 unless conditions (ie: lighting) are perfect.
BTW, K750 doesn't have a flash, it only has a led light. However the led is stronger than the K800 flash (goes further) but the K800 xenon is better for the first 2 metres. Not sure about C702.

Of SE's old 2 MP camphones, the one that impresses me the most is the W900. Amazing low light performance. Looking at samples I wouldn't be able to tell right away whether it has a CMOS or CCD sensor.
A couple of good examples from GSMArena's old review are these:
Indoor:
Full size
Outdoor, dusk:
Full size
Scale down the above two samples to 1 MP and these would be pretty close to similar shots from the S700, if not better.
Another interesting example is this W900 vs Sharp 903 comparison. (The 903 has a 3 MP CCD sensor with optical zoom.)

I see what you mean. And here I thought the W900 used the same camera module as K750 but it can't be. K750 cam module suffered from bad noise in low light.

yea i personally find it pretty interesting that the new cheap camera phone sensors don't compare to the old higher quality ones. i mean it's a bit like how the k750 is apparently a better cameraphone than the newer k550 which was a midrange "cybershot" phone. and i would imagine a phone like say... the SE t303 1.3mpx cam could not match the s700i's 1.3mpx cam

K510's camera comes close to the S700's.
