When free costs 20p a minute |

Dailing so called "freefone" numbers can cost a ridiculous amount of money. Mobile phone networks charge 15p to 20p a minute to call 0800 numbers which are free to landline users, according to comparison firm Moneysupermarket.com. And they charge the same when you call 0845 numbers, which should be charged at much lower rates. So that means a 10 minute phone call to your bank, energy or telecoms provider will cost you £1.50 using a "freephone" number-and £1.92 if you are unlucky enough to get through on an 0845 number. Moneysupermarket.com reckons that mobile phone networks are pocketing £88 million a year from this outrageous racket. It hits the poorest hardest because many pensioners, teenagers and people on benefits are most likely to rely solely on pay as you go mobile. You cant get a landline contract if you have a poor credit rating while anyone can get a pay as you go mobile. Phones regulator OFCOM should ster in and stop this and ensure all freefone numbers are exactly that-free-especially as many of these are for vital helplines. Meanwhile,if you have not got a landline then use a callbox a friends landline or keep your call as brief as possible. WELL I THINK ITS ABOUT TIME THIS HAPPENED. Why should the networks charge when landlines dont. Freephone should be freephone.

Dont get me wrong, I do agree with you but I suppose im guilty of the whole "what can I do about it? I might as well accept it" attitude.
Wasnt there a website that listed the main utililtys landline alternatives to their freephone numbers? |

The way I've always heard it is, BT don't charge for it because it doesn't cost them money. But BT charge the mobile networks to use it as it has to go through their landlines and their number diversion equipment (all 08 and 09 numbers are fronts for standard landline numbers), so the networks held off as long as they could, before having to charge the customers for it.
This has been going on for years, and O2 only changed this last year.

It was use to be taking out your free minutes but now the case is, they charge extra 20p for that on top of your free minutes. UK networks are money making machines.

T Mobile never used to charge for 0800 numbers, they changed that about 7-8 years ago.
It is a rip off but what's the point of moaning, Apathy rules in the UK.

They charge for or dnt include 0800 numbrs in there inclusive mins. Is because they hope people think theyre free or included in there mins. Therfore losing there credit or racking up bigger bills. And o2 didnt change it last year

You might like to visit here:

Search by company-name or search by number and you can find the landline number which will come out of your inclusive minutes and save you some money or be cheaper anyway.

You know, if theres one thing that really gets on my tits, its people who moan about stuff like this (prolly due to where I work).
None of you are going to change the way any company does anything, and none of you are going to stop using your mobiles, so it's simply a case of belt up, head down and getting on with your life

Stop stubbornly defending o2 for christs sake. People would think more of u if u put ya hands up and say yes. I disagree with my firms policy theyre ripping people off. Your rather like a politician skirting round the answer but not having the guts to say what evry1 else thinks

You know what, sod the hell off! I've had it with people always assuming I take O2's side.
O2, Vodafone, whatever, my point still stands, noones ever going to change it, so who really cares? Just get on with your life, surely theres more important things in life than moaning about stupid trivial things like this!

Your wrong when you say that "Is because they hope people think theyre free or included in there mins." Because O2 has aways given you a recorded message when you dial 0800 numbers saying: " access to the following number is not free of charge please re-dial by dropping the 0". I can't comment on other networks though.
Also what i do not understand is why Greggy you are assuming again this all O2's fault. You have to remember O2 was the only company that was last at stopping 08 number's coming out of customer's mins. I think you have vendetta against O2. I really think you should move on from this venedetta and get over any grievance you had with O2 in the past. One thing people have to remember is that they can easily call these numbers from a landline or a payphone box, and then you don't need to moan and cry about it. What people should do who are putting up a fuss about it, is write to Ofcom and make your view's heard with them. They are the only ones that can get mobile company's to try and make these numbers free, or write to the EU person who got all the networks to make using the phone in Europe cheaper.
