Here's my rant...

I've used SE since the T630 days and have sworn by it. I've even been impressed by the recent crops software functions like the ability to save SMSes to Memory Stick and the back up contacts onto the memory stick. Then I discovered...IT ALL DOESN'T WORK AS PROMISED!!!!!

1. You can back up your smses to memory stick. But after a f/w update, the phone will tell you that it doesn't recognize the format anymore.

2. You can back up all your contacts onto 10 memory sticks. But it will only restore onto the phone that you've backed it up in.

Or perhaps it's only a problem of the K850 (for issue 1) and G900 (for issue 2). Right now I've lost all my phone contacts because I backed it up onto a memory stick to bring it across to another phone, as I've sold off my G900. And my other SE phones refuse to read the contacts in the memory stick. Very annoying!

Pretty much false advertising I must say. Just put it in to make the kids happy. Well, it's made me a very grumpy kid and unable to trust SE much these days. Sigh.

I have restored from memory stick into many phones! K850, C902, K800, K810, W880, W890 - all worked no worries. Was originally backed up from a K850.

If you back up to your mem card all contacts and smses they do get transferred. I have me a w760.It broke and all my smses and contacts that i backed up got transferred to a w710. How does it not read the format? All smses have the same format. You just got lucky to have a really glitchy phone collection.

I must have gotten the short end of the stick then

thing is, I've tried backing up of several mem sticks and it all doesn't work. could it have been the phone? although my G900 was problem free.

the back up of sms onto mem stick, i went to verify with SE staff and they said, yeah, when you update, you cannot read old smses anymore

The sms problem is true. However your totally wrong on the contacts bit. If you put your memory card into a reader. You will find that the G900 (and any other symbian handset made by SE) filesystem on a memory card is different to a standard phone. The G900's contacts file (VCF) is visible if you plug the phone into a pc via usb. It will be found in the backup folder along with the calendes backup. Copy what you want to your pc. Next put your memory card into the phone your going to use.

EDIT: ^^^Missed that before I posted...

Hi there... I observed that you backed up your contacts and sms from a G900 which is Symbian phone and your trying to restore those on a non-symbian one... Maybe they are not compatible and maybe they are and you are going wrong somewhere???

In which folder on memory stick are these files stored???

I have a P990 and my bro has a W610 and the contacts backup folder is different in both...

Put your memory card in the phone your going to use and format the memory card via the format option in the file manager.Once done make an entry in your phone book and then backup the contents to the memory card.Connect your phone to your pc and browse to your memory card.At this point make sure your browser is set to show hidden files.Look for a folder named SYSTEM.You will find the backup file in there.Copy the name and then delete it.Locate the backup you did from the G900 and paste the name you copied.

Once you've renamed the G900 contacts backup.Put the file into your memory card in the correct directory in the SYSTEM folder. Unplug your phone from the pc and restart. Go into contacts and restore your backup. You should have all your contacts on your phone.

Sorry about the split posts but doing this on my T650 and only allowed so many words per post.
