SE C905i vs C905a, some insight please |

I live in the states and i wanted the C905, should I wait for the i version, so I can get the 3G connectivity?
I am on at&t.
and they have 3G in my Area.
for those who have experienced it, is there a big difference in internet speeds between 3G and non-3G?
or should I just get the regular C905?
I also have a couple of questions about the C905, is it able to stream youtube?
Have more then one Java application running at the same time?
can I install a java messenger and minimize it and still run it live.
I am getting rid of my year old N95 for this cell.
thanks guys the last SE I had was my trusty W810i, its a beauty but has SE evolved since then? |

It's all about bands (radio frequencies) that the phones use to connect to the network. AT&T uses 850 MHz and 1900MHz frquencies in different areas. The C905i is a 'quad band' phone but it uses 850 and 1900 MHz at GPRS speeds only - thats 50kbps possibly optimised to 90kbps maximum, or in other words SLOOOOOWWWW!
The C905a utilises 850, 1900 and Europe's 2100 MHz frequencies at UMTS (3G - maximum of 384kbps) and HSDPA (3.5G - maximum of 3600kbps) speeds. Very fast
I don't know if the C905 streams You-tube but if it does you'll need an HSDPA area or a Wifi network to watch it properly. UMTS (3G) will not be fast enough for a satisfying video experience without pauses.
All SE phone can multi-task java apps.
SE have moved on a great deal from the W810 with alot of cool features and an awesome new UI. The C905 is eagerly anticipated and should match or exceed the N95 in everything but screen size (2.4" vs 2.6"/2.8").

I do know that the C905 will do mobile youtube no problems with normal 3g (umts), but I do not know if it works with desktop youtube (I'm guessing no but we will see)

You-tube via laptop using 3G modem is no good, I can tell you from experience. I haven't tried Mobile You-tube but I thought Oli found it pretty useless on an SE phone. Its great via iPhone, perhaps connecting to the same site the iPhones use would work?

You want to wait for the "a" version if you are on ATT. It will most likely cost more but, the "i" version will not be able to use 3G everywhere. Phone calls on either will be fine. Just data speeds will be affected.

It actually uses them at EDGE speeds (2.5g), and EDGE on the c905 is far faster then it was on my k790i, I can even stream youtube vids, sometimes. |

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure about what frequencies is used with EDGE. I did check the official specs, but individual EDGE bands were not mentioned.
I've found 384kbps is too slow for streamed video on my laptop but DAP Download Accelerator makes a big difference. Even 900kbps is just okay for some videos, but is fine when DAP is used.

Yes I use my V640i as a USB modem for my Laptop, but only occasionally now that I have an iPhone. SE phones cabe used as a BT modem too, but for some reason my V640i doesn't cope with that and disconnects randomly. I've had as much as 1.5 Mbps download speed on my V640i. The iPhone in the same area can't get better than 893kbps.
If your interested in phones as modems, check out this. It's a wireless router which shares a 3G signal with all your computers. You can even plug your phone into it via the USB port. It will also cope with EVDO phones on the Sprint/Nextel network.

So the C905 won't give me those speeds if it is not a C905a.
C905i will pick up Edge only, and still won't be able to surf the net on the laptop.
but the C905a will pick up the american 3G, and laptop surfing will be better.
Do I have this down right, folks?
Or am I still confused?
and the Difference will be very noticeable?
BTW my N95 is the Euro 3G version and it streams m.youtube but sucks using as a laptop modem. |

The difference is very noticeable. Hsdpa makes mobile broadband useable.
The C905i will work as a modem but at EDGE speeds therefore slow. Definately get the C905a!
