This will quickly turn into a fanboy debate but to summarise:

360 is cheaper but incomplete with no Wi-Fi or high-definition movie disc capability, you also have to pay an extra £40 A YEAR to play online. PS3 is more expensive but is a complete unit with everything built including Blu-Ray and free access to the PSN.

The PS3 is more powerful but at the moment only a few games exploit that like MGS4, most are multi-platform and hence made on a level to suit both machines.

The choice is yours, initial economy with all the extras adding up to the biggest expense or a larger initial outlay for a complete package.

Im a 360 man my self, but i have both consoles, i love GT5 on the ps3 but i love the xbox live, the ps3 on-line is pants, there servers aint gonna be around for ever, the ps3 has a hard drive you can swap your self and it tells you how to do it, the 360 has better games list ok it doesn't have blu-ray but thats gonna die anyway (you heard it here first)why would u want wifi on a games machine is beyond me anyone with a ounce of knowledge about gaming knows u don't play over wifi, we (360) dont need blu-ray because our games are better for a start, the ps3 only has a few titles like f1 that we cant have on the 360 for now.

really its down to personal choice most people always chose what they no best in in this case people go for the ps3 because the 360 has bad press about dying (RROD) i have had it 5 times since launch day not a selling point i no, but try and take your self to a place where u can test them both out and decide for your self dont let people make the choice for you thats what i say,

@Merlyn101:

What you really need to do is weigh up what you want in a console. Asking such a question anywhere on the internet will give you the same fanboy comments, and when I was looking for a new console it really did not help at all. I chose a PS3 but that's beside the point.

PS3: You get a BluRay drive, built in WiFi - to say that nobody plays games over WiFi is ridiculous. I know many that do and I do myself with no problems. And the PS3 also has more power. The PS3 is bigger than the 360 (I was surprised at how small the 360 is), but it does seem to pack more heat, although no games bar MGS 4 have really unleashed its potential. Saying the PS3 doesn't have any worthwhile exclusive titles is ridiculous also, and it is also subjective. There is Metal Gear Solid 4, the Resistance series, the MotorStorm series, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (and soon to be the full version), and so on.

XBox 360: You don't get so much built in and if you want them, you need to pay more for them. Though the initial cost of the 360 system is significantly cheaper. It is smaller so if you have a small place for it to sit, this might be a deciding factor. Apparently the online gaming is a better service (haven't tried it myself). BUT you have to pay for it, so you would really expect it to be better wouldn't you! In saying that, I have never encountered a problem with Sony's free service. The 360 also has some great exclusives like the Gears of War series, Halo 3, Forza 2, etc.

In talking about these exclusive titles, it is worth noting that some of the best titles have come out on both systems, like GTA IV, Midnight Club LA, the EA Sports games, Burnout Paradise, COD 4, and many many more. So really you don't lose out much in getting either console.

I'll just add the things that made me decide to get a PS3: The built in WiFi was probably the biggest deciding factor. Also the fact I have a PSP and there is some PSP-PS3 support with more promised and coming, the BluRay drive, and the release of MGS 4 which came out not long after I purchased.

The best thing you can do to help you decide is to go to a shop which has both consoles set up and try them both within a short space of time so you get a worthy comparison. It is your decision, so don't let these fanboy comments sway you as they might end up swaying you in the wrong direction!

Both consoles are good machines and it boils down to personal preference and what games you like to enjoy playing. If you are a MGS fan than it is PS3 if you are hooked to DOA, well than it is 360.

Yeah, both are great consoles and the best games tend to be on both platforms...

I went for a PS3 as I believe its a more complete package/system when your looking at having a centre piece entertainment system (movies, music etc)...

Cant beat the Xbox price though, £130 is great!

What on earth have you based that on? I have had no problems with the PSN with no lag online and who ever said it's a temporary service, that's just nonsense.

The 360 has better games list ok it doesn't have blu-ray but thats gonna die anyway (you heard it here first)

Hillarious! Blu-Ray won the format war for a reason, it killed HD-DVD because it is the next generation movie format. M$'s misguided idea that DLC will kill physical discs is laughable to be honest.

why would u want wifi on a games machine is beyond me anyone with a ounce of knowledge about gaming knows u don't play over wifi

Try because your internet connection is upstairs with the PC and the PS3 is in the front room. It works beautifully too, no wires, no delay, it just works.

we (360) dont need blu-ray because our games are better for a start, the ps3 only has a few titles like f1 that we cant have on the 360 for now.

Ok ignoring the vast nugget that is HD movies the Blu-Ray drive also allows games on the disc. MGS4 for example fills a 50GB disc thanks in no small part to the phenominal uncompressed audio quality. The 360 is limited to DVD games and hence cannot reach such levels of quality and has to have short games, why was Halo only 5 hours again?

Exclusives really expand further than F1 e.g.:
-Metal Gear Solid 4
-Little Big Planet
-Killzone 2
-WipEout
-Gran Turismo 5 Prologue / Gran Turismo 5 (Full version)
-Motorstorm / Motorstorm 2
-Resistance Fall of Man / Resistance 2
-Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
-Heavenly Sword
-Warhawk
-Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
-Playstation Eye & associated games (Plus Eye of Justice)

As for the RROD, it's a major isue imho and the fact that they still haven't sorted it is a disgrace. Having a product die 5 TIMES should tell you something, I'd be asking for a refund after the 2nd time (unfit for use) and getting a product which works.

My point is on the size, the PS3 is a bit bigger but imo better styled BUT everyone seems to forget the 360's gargantuan power supply while the PS3's is again built in.

Prices:
PS3 £279.99

360 Arcade £129.99
20GB HDD £39.99
WiFi Adapter £59.99
Xbox Live 12mnth £39.99 (PER YEAR)
Total = £269.96

So pretty much the same but with no Blu-Ray

i have got both the 360 and ps3 and to be honest they both have their plus points but i find myself going more for the ps3 these days with the likes of LittleBigPlanet and MGS4....

Its a huge bonus that i dont have to pay to play online like i do with the 360 and the service is just as good as LIVE and its free!!!

Plus the future is great for the PS3, what with HOME coming soon and further updates to unleash the true potential...

@trev.... i also have both as stated above and was just commenting on some plus points i found.... there are also plus points for the 360 like the upcoming dashboard update an the huge catalogue of games it has plus it seems like M$ are ready to throw a lot of money to get some timed exclusives.

I just find the future being a bit more rosy for the ps3 as its got more potential but who knows what M$ will pull out of the hat with the next generation console.

PS3 all the way. Blue-ray alone is a reason to get PS3. Eventually PS3 will end up having better games than Xbox

Just got me thinking, after MikLSP's comment about xbox's games being limited to the size of a DVD (i think dual layer) That eventually the PS3 will have a massive advantage over the xbox in terms of the length of games and the massive storage that blu-ray's offer. What's gonna happen with the next gen xbox console, will they be allowed to build it with a blu-ray drive??

I personally own an Xbox and i really want a PS3. I love my xbox and use it for streaming media as well as a games console, but i do like the fact the PS3 has built-in wifi and at some point i'd like a blu-ray player so it makes sense to get an all-in-one machine. People always say that the PSN online isnt up to much compared to Xbox live, but these people are normally the ones with Xbox's! Comments here make me believe that PSN is just as good. Makes me wonder how M$ can charge so much for a live service that 'could' be free.

I guess what it comes down to is whether you are in to a particular game range, ie your Metal Gear's Gran Turismos, or whether your a Forza or Halo fan. And also a big factor is price. If you just want a high def console just to play games, and arent bothered about particular titles or blu-ray etc, then the Xbox is really a better choice at £130!
