Hi all.

I've had my C905 for about a week now. Fantastic phone, however I've had a few issues I could do with some help with.

GPS: Getting a signal is pretty much impossible. I have tried with and without aGPS, and have only rarely received a signal good enough to work with. When it does work almost any movement and the signal is lost. On one occasion I got a signal when driving, but it seemed to be 100yards out of sync all the time (this is using the Wayfinder Navigation stuff that came with it).

Google Maps: It wasn't on the handset when I got it, so I downloaded it from m.google.com/maps. it works, but doesn't see the phones built in GPS - instead using the nearest radio mast as a guide.
I also tried downloading it from getjar, by selecting the C902 option. This also worked by said there "Where am I?" option was not available on this handset.

Am I alone with this? I was a passenger for an hours drive in my friends car, and didn't get a GPS signal for the entire drive. Very depressing.

The GPS signal problem is 100% firmware related the C702 had the same problem on older firmwares it's fixed now though for the C702, My C702 was also 02 branded & the only way to get google maps back and working properly is to debrand the phone.

I too have had the same problems.

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=177316

I tried everything. I went down to CPW and told them of the problem much to their amusement. The arrogant and probably minimum waged 'shop assistant' simply turned off GPS and then turned it on again, something I had tried many times. Sods law the damn thing worked. 10 mins later it failed again. When I do get a fix it is also woefully inaccurate. I am sure Sony would not release this function on a phone if it were this crap. If I ever got lost with this 'satnav' i would be certainly be better off reading road signs and using common sense!

Today I went to another CPW and told them that it was dropping calls and they gave me a new one.

I will report tomorrow whether the new handset is any better.

Well. I charged up the new C905 for 4 or 5 hours and then decided to go and have a pint in the local to test it out.

I got a fix within 20 seconds. Google maps works a treat. Not perfect but within 5m at all times and no drift.

Wayfinder also works nearly perfectly now too. Told me to take a right (on foot) 2m before! Tracked me down the pavement perfectly. As I expected.

If you check everything out like i did and it still does not work i would strongly suggest sending it back as faulty because if, like me, you want everything to be working perfectly it aint good enough.

Happy with the C905 now at last.

Hi guys.

On this topic - can I ask if you need to pay an additional amount for the GPS service or does it work off WAP? I have unlimited WAP and was looking to upgrade to the C905.
Also - I noticed Way Finder is only a trial - any idea how much it is to purchase or if other software is avaliable.

I had this problem for a while when using my old W760 and the GPS on that. (This may go a little off topic but it comes back round I promise) I also had a problem with getting the gmail app towork properly on my K850 at the time. I researched a bit into the gmail problem from Google themselves and found that it didn't work because of the way the networks send you through their servers for data efffectively redirecting every ping request needlessly (it's so they can monitor your usage trends and other things). To fix the gmail problem I hhd to create a new internet setting entering only the APN ("internet" for Contract Vodafone UK) and the username/password (web/web for Contract Vodafone UK), aparently it gives 'direct' access to the internet instead of through the network portals. I used this as the default internet connection for all apps and the gmail app miraculously worked. I tried it on my W760 to get the gmail app working and then the GPS started working properly. It really shouldn't be related but it apparently is. It might havge something to do with aGPS using a WAP signal to expedite the locating process but if it works (and it does now for me, my W760 and C905) don't fix it

Maybe an guru can explain here why that worked for me.

Are you sure? The downloaded from Google Maps app claims to use an enabled GPS receiver if you look at the documentation within the app.
