Mobile Phones Will Shoot Full HD Video in 2012,' Ericsson Says
Ericsson AB of Sweden revealed its efforts in the mobile broadband market at a press conference Nov 6, 2008.
In the area of mobile communications, innovative technologies such as "HSPA evolution," which is the successor to HSPA, and "LTE (long term evolution)," which features high-speed communications of more than 100Mbps, are drawing interest. For both of these technologies, Ericsson intends to proactively develop and market embedded modules, base station facilities and other products.
During the conference, Ericsson mentioned its concept of a future mobile terminal as "a mobile device in 2012." According to the concept, high-function terminals, in the future, will be equipped with a 12- to 20-Mpixel camera and support full HD video shooting capability.
"We have an image of a mobile terminal equipped with digital camera and camcorder capabilities of the future," said Jonas Lundstedt, Ericsson's Director Portfolio Management, Product and Portfolio Management.
The terminal's display will have XGA resolution. And the operating frequency of the application processor will reach 1GHz, he said. As for its telecommunications functionality, Ericsson expects the device to support 100Mbps or faster LTE.
The company considers that the market shift toward such a future mobile terminal is gradual. Current HSPA technology has a maximum transmission speed of 7.2Mbps, and 59 commercial networks are already operating around the world (38 of which are using Ericsson's system), it said. According to Ericsson, 805 kinds of HSPA-compatible terminals have been released from 129 manufacturers thus far.
"HSPA evolution," an extended version of HSPA, will emerge in late 2008 or later, with the maximum data transmission speed expected to rise to 21Mbps.
"W-CDMA, which has a maximum speed of 384Kbps, emerged in about 2002," Lundstedt said. "The capacity of data transmission will have grown 60 times larger in the six years since then."
On the other hand, he considers that the degree of the introduction of LTE is different depending on the region. The early shift to LTE is scheduled in some regions including Japan, whereas HSPA and HSPA evolution are likely to remain the mainstream for some time to come in other regions, he said.

its amazing really, the speed at which technology progresses these days. God knows what it'll be like in 2020 or later. |

well there's technology and then there's useless technology. why not come up with something more productive, something that people will use. 1080p video is a requirement when you have a screen of more than 46inches. even a 42 inch works brilliantly with 720p. ericsson are getting ahead of themselves.

Ya dont need that much in a mobile i see no point. It would have to be a bloody good battery to power it. |

@QVGA:
I agree with u.
I think, in future there will be just video phones every where! Mobile phones will either get extra ordinarily advanced or will just be altered by another device, e.g. PDA

Lol 2020 or later will be a keyring, press a button and then it turns into a SpeakPhone, speak and it does it for you (even though most do that but for everything)

Well all this stuff is just an evolution and not a revolution to the existing technology. Revolution would be something that hasn't happened before, like integraded projector, key and wallet replacement etc. |

I understand the capability of shooting video in HD resolution... because in this way you can record almost every moment of your life in HD quality than you play it back on your TV in HD quality (if it will reach that QUALITY too, not just that resolution in bad quality).
On the other hand by the rules of physical optics is nearly impossible to make a camera in such compact size (for example with 1:2.8 inch diagonal sensor) to shot clear 12-20 mp photos. So the sensors should be bigger, and the photos became less clear, less sharp, etc. However who needs a 20 mp camera???? With a 20 mp picture you could decorate a whole wall of your room, but at least you can print your photo in a huge poster size. |

I'm don't need huge(resolution and memory eating) low quality pics. honestly- 6mp is MORE than enough on my camera- give me QUALITY, not QUANTITY on my cell phone!
Great thing about the the HD, but quality will again be a big issue.
Wonder what memory size we'll get by then- we'll need a lot for those pics, vids - and dvd quality movies for that screen

this is a joke seriously what are they thinking why dont they put the time and money they have used for that into a decent phone, i havent come across a better video recorder on a cell phone since i had a N93i the phone was a little big but i recorded a full hour of video at a concert played it back on a 42inch lcd and it was better than watching tv, we dont and never will need hd on a phone the screen is to small, and pictures you gonna need some awesome storage to be taking pictures of that size, there just getting aheadof technology and saying yer we could aim to do this that wouldnt benefit anyone, there my rant over

Yeah!! 5 MP are a lot of pixels but... there is no quality... bad colors, bad lens, bad sensors, everything is automatic...
Screens... QVGA I think is too litle :S ... 800x600 would be nice xD

If they integrate full size camera lenses and sensors, this would work really well. My Panasonic TZ-5 records at 1080p, the quality of which is pretty good. I don't see why in a few years that quality would be on mobile phones, just like VGA now.
(Look at what the Renoir is capable of already, it really has amazing video quality for a mobile phone: http://i.gsmarena.com/vv/revi[....]noir-sample-video-gsmarena.avi )
