Ringtones for W760 |

I just purchase a W760 and in a creative burst decided to create my own ring tones. I Edited and MP3 file for a suitable tone and then saved it as a 128kb MP3. It plays on all players - including the W760 but the phone will not accept it as a ring tone. Is this due to some special encoding that SE has put in ring tones to encourage users to buy from them rather than create their own? Surely there is a way around it. I see that one of the stock ring tones shows as an MP3 file (although I can't see if from Explorer when connected to the PC. |

Is your phone branded in any way? The only reason I can think of that custom ringtones are blocked is that maybe your service provider has blocked it in their custom firmware.

It is an AT&T phone. Is that what you mean by branded?

Yeah, does it have AT&T branding all throughout the menus of the phone?

The main menu has AT&T all over it except for the stuff setting - things that are unlikely to be customized for a provider. |

Yes, it appears that AT&T do not allow people to create their own ringtones, as you can see if you read through this page here.
It is to do with music licensing issues, because having a ringtone playing out loud is technically playing music in public, which in theory everyone should be paying for. That's why ringtones from service providers often cost so much! Most service providers don't actually block ringtones, but obviously AT&T do. Presumably because American law is stricter on this kind of thing.

this problem has been around for years in branded firmware.
The first post in this topic is a guide to packaging the mp3 using the drm packager so that it will work for you.

Problem solved! I'm not sure if it was the bitrate of the file size. I recoded the ringtone to 64kb/sec and it works fine. For anyone interested, I used Audacity to trim the file. The app is WAY overkill for my usage. Then I output the file as WAV. I then used another freeware "Wave to MP3 Encoder" to encode at the lower bit rate. I've now done another 3 or 4 which is quite enough for now.
