Hey everybody, I've just read a post about browsing the internet (wap) free of charge on your phone. I thought this was strange because I know that you don't pay for browsing, but for the data you receive because you are browsing.

I was right and further on in the topic there's talk about network loopholes where you can trick your service provider into thinking your not downloading. This has something to do about opera mini mod "shodow connect".

I wanna know if there are any knowm loopholes for vodacom or anything I can do to browse for free? O and by the way it's Vodacom South Africa, I'm using a SE W800i with opera mini mod 2.06 and Vodacom's default GPRS profile.

UPDATE:

OK so I actually got somewhere!!!! Not very far, but better than nothing. Free browsing works like this: What you do is you use a mobile browser (like opera mini mod) that you can change your server. Then you change the sever to any site you can brwse free on your phone (like i.e. your service providers "home page"). Then when you connect to the internet your service provider thinks you are connected to their site and don't charge you.

OK so I used Opera mini mod 3.10 and the following settings ( GO here: Menu>tools>settings>network)

•Opera mini server: http://live.vodacom.com@80.232.117.41:80
•The "Check time-out for connections" setting is clicked (marked) and set to 120(s)
• The "shadow connect" setting is clicked and the address to connect is : http://live.vodafone.com
•All the rest of the settings are left default

OK so I can connect to the internet but I still get charged (R2 per Megabyte to be presice, and that's South African Rand). I don't know what I'm doing wrong except that I'm using the wrong OM mod version, but I've just downloaded the right one and am gonna try it now.

If you see anything else that I'm doing wrong please correct me.

I believe your following the settings that i posted. Don't ever tell that it's BETTER THAN NOTHING. You're just unlucky that it doesn't work in your phone.

OK, but do you think it will work if I use microemulator (with opera mini mod) and my phone as a modem?

I'm not sure. What is the homepage and proxy address of your network provider?

My homepage is http://live.vodafone.com (I have tested and I can browse totally free on my phones default browser) and my default proxy is 196.006.128.012 but opera mini mod doesn't want to connect with that proxy so I use 80.232.117.41 .

The other thing that I realized is that I can't use 80.232.117.41 as my proxy at my phones internet profile settings but only at opera mini mod, I have to use my default proxy at menu>Settings>Connectivity>Internet settings>Internet profile>More>Settings (this is where I change my phones internet settings).

Thanx very much for the help, I appreciate it very much!!

@sitnet: med is correct. Just restore the original internet settings. You just need to change the network settings of opera mini. Try to install the mod v2.06.

Try to use the following Opera Mini Server:
196.006.128.012@server.operamini.com:80

Put a check on SHADOW CONNECT then put http://live.vodafone.com on the "Address To Connect" box

Thanx very much I'll try that one( I do think I have tried it though as it is my default internet settings ip address, but it's certainly worth a try)!

O and another thing, I posted this trick on SE NSE forums, hope you don't mind (I have thanked you and fdigital at the end of that post so people can know it's you and fdigital that helped me understand this trick.)

@sitnet, If you have tried this trick: on the opera mini server: live.vodacom.com@server.operamini.com:80 And it not working, maybe you dont browse this site: live.vodacom.com freely...

I tested, I can browse that site totally free, Oh and I type wrong all along, it's not vodacom.com it's vodafone.com, but that doesn't matter because I just typed it wrong here but right on my phone.

What happens now is when I try to open a page it or gives my the error of no connection found and that I should do a connection test, or it gives me that java exeption blablabla error.

OK I know I'm gonna post some pics later so you can see what I meen.
