File Associate - Open files differently |

A new program has been released, offering a customization feature that has been requested since long but never available on UIQ until now.
File Associate lists the so-called file type associations, that is various data types along with the viewer applications used to display them. Seeing such list is a novelty on UIQ and quite rare in Symbian in general - and you can even change the associations! That is, if you have another suitable viewer that you like better, you can assign it to the respective file type.
As an example, you can use Docs To Go for opening .doc files, but use QuickOffice for viewing .xls and .ppt files, as you like.
With File Associate you also receive Generic viewer, an application that supports displaying flash, ZIP, text and binary files. You will be able to view local flash files by one click, browse ZIP file contents, and look into any file that you find on your phone. All this works within any standard file manager that opens files using the associations maintained by the operating system.

Major features:
- Lists the file type associations on the phone.
- Changes what viewer application is started when opening a document file (available on SonyEricsson phones).
- Includes Generic viewer application for viewing ZIP, text and binary files.
- Supports viewing local flash files using the Opera Flash Plug-in.
Free trial is available. Enjoy the program, and share your views here.
Current version: 1.20

Nice application, but since this program is not free, is it ok to use Esato/the community as your personal advertising platform? It just seems a little odd to me

@zed: nice. I hope that CPS keeps developing apps for uiq's. This is a nice app. Will be trial versions?

Will be trial versions? Sure, the stuff you download is free and fully functional for two weeks, at which time it asks for registration.

Nice app (from description) but I could not get it working
Just downloaded it from your site, installed OK, I restarted my phone and launch the File Associate, whoops: "trial expired, plrease register"
Can't get past that point. When I press "continue" not entering registration code, it closes. What should I do to evaluate it?

Yes, the above problem seems to occur on "random" phones, and is being worked on. There will be an update as soon as the reason is determined. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Maybe in a second release we'd be getting with more files supported.

what about .AVI files? i have some on phone, but it didn't recognise them. File Associate does not specifically deal with the AVI file type, it handles it just any other type declared on your phone. So, if you want to associate AVI with some app that can display it, then locate the AVI type in the type list, and assign your application to it. Then test using a file manager. Please report your findings here.
had some .SWF files, still the fring icon (i have fring installed) and when i accesss it, still no program to open. If the flash type (.swf extension) is assigned to fring, but fring does not display a flash file when clicking on it, then only the programmers of fring can help you. However, you can display local flash files the following way:
- install the Opera Flash Plug-in;
- in File Associate assign the Flash type to Generic viewer;
- click on a local flash file from a file manager and it will be displayed by the Web application.
Maybe in a second release we'd be getting with more files supported. On one hand, File Associate 1.00 lets you change any and all associations declared on your phone. All are supported. On the other hand, some types might need special treatment (like flash), and that can indeed be added in later versions of FA, but I need your concrete suggestions for doing so.
