Not sure if anyone here knew but Orange have stopped doing trade in's on pay as you go. I was with my brother he was upgrading and they said no,blame the box breakers for that. Very annoying for him that was he was hoping of getting 10 quid off though he did get 50 quid off a Nokia 6500 slide cos of his top ups. Does anyone know when they introduced this? Its so annoying like whats happened with O2 pre pay upgrades cos of other people spoiling it for others. |

Once again, blame the foreigners, blame the box breakers.
They always ruin it for their own stupid gain :/

Boxbreakers: Those who purchase a pay as you go phone from a mobile phone store with the intention of unlocking and then selling on minus the network/sim card, usually abroad.
This results in the network losing most of the handsets subsidery. Pay as you go handsets prices are reduced by the networks as they assume you're going to be topping the phone up and therefore spending money with them, hence the often compulsary top up.
The compulsary top up was introducted because of box breakers, the £20 compulsary top up when buying with cash was introduced at The Carphone Warehouse because of box breakers, and now Orange have stopped trade ins because of box breakers.
They spoil it for the rest of us, without a care in the world.
I should point out too, 9 times out of 10, a box breaker is foreign and is unlocking them and selling them abroad, at a profit, as their business. There's nothing happy and fluffy about it, they're not doing it as presents for their relatives etc back in their country, they do this for profit.

Depends I spose, if you're doing it for financial gain then yes you are, if it's a one off for a friend or family, but you're only going to do it once that's not so bad, but it's not helping either.

Well now I know what a box breaker is.
How much profit would someone make on doing this. Surely it cant be that much .

Oh, profits can be very nice, not on one phone of course, but usally these people buy alot of (luxury) phones.
Compared to some other countries, phones in the UK are generally cheap, even simfree, so when they buy an even cheaper subsidised prepay phone, unlock it and sell it as simfree in their country, there can be a large price difference.
This happens in The Netherlands too, prepaid phones are not as cheap here, as in the UK (though still subsidised), but it's easier to get here and the charger doesn't have to be replaced, when the phone's bought in NL.
People (often from eastern european countries) go to every phone shop in some town, buy all available phones of a certain model, visit a few towns in the neighbourhood and drive home the same day, with maybe 50-60 or more phones.
A special advantage of UK prepaid phones (compared to those in other countries) is : most high-end phones are also available on payandgo after being a few months on the market, in many other countries you can get only low-end phones on payandgo.

Someone always has to spoil it for the rest.

the Nokia 3220 was the last real phone I had any dealings with and box breaking, we (orange retail) were doing them for £49.99 or £39.99 with a trade in, Hasan the local ring leader would send them back to Russia, Uzbek, Romania and the like, he said he was getting somewhere close to £70 for one, so it's a lucrative business indeed..
as J has pointed out, PAYG are subsidised by the operator as they assume you will spend £x in your lifetime as a customer, sadly this isn't the case for box breakers......

Yup, prices in Russia are possibly the most expensive anywhere in the world.
