Show Passport to buy a mobile |

As well as contract customers people wanting to buy a mobile phone could be forced to show a passport and have their details added to a new security data base it was revealed yesterday. Everyone intending to buy a pay as you go or contract phone would have to prove their identity. The scheme is part of a new communications Bill designed to tackle terrorism and crime. It comes just days after home secretary Jacqui Smith unveiled plans to build a central database holding the date and time of every phone call and email in Britain,but not the content. Public consultation will begin in the new year but news of the scheme has raised concern. Collecting phone and internet records would be a step too far for the British way of life said Richard Thomas a spokesman for the office of the Information Commissioner. And Shami Chakrabarti,the director of Liberty added The bigger the database the greater the risk of accident error and abuse. What does anyone else think of this. It seems to me ok if its to protect the public but could also cause problems.

I dont see a problem with this.
This will cost the goverment some money, so the must be a good reason why they want to do it. |

Nothing to hide, nothing to fear but something to dislike. I like my shopping to be quick and painless. Everything has a value, i hand over the right money, they give me the product and i'm gone. Contract i can understand because before you pay anything it's all in good faith, but PAYG seems like an intrusion. You don't have a passport so you can't buy a phone, perhaps they should let you go on a flight with a debit card and a utility bill based on your credit rating. They might as well give the money to pensioners who'll struggle to keep warm in the winter to burn as fuel, at least that burning of money will have a real benefit.

see nothing wrong with it. in malaysia and singapore have to show i.d to get simcards as all are registered . though think requiring passport is bit silly as know a number of people in uk cant get passport (they were football hooligans) should just be able to show i.d. unless u.k trying to make money from passport applications...

Yes security wise it may be a good idea but it is going to drain some money on the government. It must bf a motion moved with terrorism I guess
