Good news if you like to look purely on market share.
Nokia's report also claimed it have 2% decrease in market share.
now I wonder is Samsung/ Motorola being the winner or it includes SonyEricsson

Oct. 20, 2008
Mobile Communications Company posted sales of KRW 3.815 trillion (USD 3.589 billion), 29.9% up from the second quarter 2008. From handset business, the sales reached KRW 3.514 trillion (USD 3.306 billion), 40.8% up from a year earlier. Shipment of handsets recorded 23.0 million, 5% growth YoY but declined 17% from the second-quarter, due to slow sales in India and emerging markets. However, operating profit margin in handset division remained at double digit at 11.5% due to growth in high-end models such as “Secret”, “Viewty” and variety of QWERTY messaging phones in the U.S.
Shipment in the fourth-quarter expected to grow and achieve 100 million units annual goal, and double digit profitability is expected to be sustained. “Renoir”, 8-mega pixel camera phone, and the second version of the “PRADA phone by LG” and “Cookie”, a mid-tier full-touch phone will be unveiled in the coming quarter.

SE reported a loss. Has to be samsung. They're really upping the ante

There's only one manufacturer that is capable of eating into Nokia's market share and that is unquestionably Samsung. At the moment they are the "in form" manufacturer.
I believe we are going to see another drop from Motorola. They haven't come up with anything and their distribution and marketing is dead.

If we are talking market share I believe SE has most proably maintained their part compared to Q2 (they reported loss of 1% compared to Q3 last year, which gives an estimate of 8% for Q3 this year).

Samsung, SE and Moto all expected to increase market share.
Nokia and LG lost market share, LG because of its shrinking CDMA market share and Nokia apparently because of delayed handsets and falling demand in W Europe.

Are you certain about Motorola? I have serious doubts about them.

Yes, according to the Taiwanese OEMs, who manufacture a lot of the handsets we use.
I don't think Moto will disappear altogether, they can only fall so far and they are bound to make a comeback eventually. They have lost quite a bit, however, I wouldn't completely write them off.

Thanks for the link. The situation at Motorola is precisely similar to Ericsson's (of course, with different sets of problems) and they look to be in a threatened position. This also makes me think of Siemens.
I have this feeling that they (Motorola) may end up being an American orientated manufacturer because they really aren't keeping up with the competition worldwide. I mean, their leading position in emerging markets is busy eroding and they are strongest at home in the US.
It's a pity really as I absolutely love my V8 with its amazing build quality and unsurpassed call quality.

But even in Motos own home market the competition from RIM and Apple is stiff (at least in more expensive devices).

Absolutely correct Arne Anka! ...and then you also provided their solution- concentrate more on the cheap solutions while occassionally throwing one or two quality and feature filled competitive products. Their support base in their home country is still solid and they need to capitalise on that unlike worldwide where we are less forgiving.

remember people don't have money to spend on cellphones anymore....Some people can hardly find food to eat....so you might see a decrease in mobile marketing

I am interested to see whether SE can execute the plan to throw out more high end stuff...tht news we saw about admitting wrong strategy and focus on high end stuff was done before we see every gov start pumping money into the financial system plus a lot of job cuts begin.
Mobile phone is not something people will die if they dont have it... for me, I see the coming years could be the focus on who able to have good sell thru on mid range to entry level phone. Profit margin will get eroded and market share can be something all hoping for...this is some sort like a strategy...you need people who start getting their first phone using one brand at entry level first...when they can afford better phone....that particular brand will be top on the wish list as usual. Well at least this is what happened at where I stay hehe...
let see...btw I am pin pointing on market share, not the Profit and lost but someone have point it out.
SE is making a lost...but it didn't mean they cannot ends up getting more market share. They predict they hold a flat market share but will be known on 24th Oct once Samsung get their report out. Motorola .... I believe it could be flat in output.
Taiwan OEM or ODM for motorola can be tip of an iceberg since Motorola also having their own factory...i remmeber one is at southern part of shanghai being a JV and the other one as many known...at Tianjin China.
OEM and ODM mostly making entry level phone.... and as far as I know if you follow up all the time on digitimes.com or evertiq.com you might have notice Compal ...one of motorola odm is kinda indicating their sales for this year isn't spectacular while Foxconn...one of the big supplier for Motorola is planning to trim down their headcount in china by ....80 to 90k yes....they have 500k workers in china....its like poppulation of a city.
For me....everything happening on the economy is messing up things we used to know...so what I enjoying now is to see how the situation of all this manufacturer...I seen it before in 2000 when Ericsson need to JV with Sony. |

Samsung to major market is USA and South Korea...GSM or CDMA
one of them already in credit crisis...the other one is going to burst...this is what i can recalled when a few months back...newspaper at asia keep on reporting scandal and problem on South Korea's credit card and personal loan issue....
once this two major maker suffering...it can hurt Samsung as well.

People we have to wait untill all the manufacturers hand in their reports, (to see who lost and who won and by how much). Before then we can only speculate. All of you seem to have forgoten Apple. My prediction is: Nokia -1.5% , Samsung +0.5%, Lg a bit down, Motorola and SE same, iPhone +0.5%. But this is total speculation. In a week or so we will know more. However, one thing looks pretty certain - Moto and SE are the loosers of 2008 with the rest 'floating' around.

Yes... Even if this is a bad period for the economy, looking at the market share somebody must gain some points and i think that Apple sold a lot of iPhones. It's still only a nieche but from the launch in (almost) all Europe more and more iPhones are appearing...
