N96 Too Much Like N95 Retail Staff Say
Customers are disappointed with the Nokia N96
Nokia’s flagship phone, the N96 is not taking the market by storm as the handset manufacturer had been hoping, retail staff reveal.
The most common criticism that staff in high street stores hear from customers is that the N96 is too similar to the N95. According to a Vodafone saleswoman, customers are bringing back the phones saying they would rather stick to their old N95s.....

Well, the Original N95, was SO far ahead of the game that Nokia have really struggled to significantly improve upon it, next March, when the Mega TS device arrives maybe

I agree. The original N95 is still selling really well so I guess they might be taking the 'if its not broke, don't fix it' route with this phones format and do a proper replacement in 2009.

In my opinion, the N95 -> N96 situation is kinda like the K800i -> K810i. It should really just be considered a refresh of the design to keep it up to date in terms of Nokia's design strategies. I mean, the N95 really does look like an old phone now, so they can't sell that forever as it is. Giving it a new shell will give it another year's shelf life (even if that's where it stays).

I think it was obvious (at least to me..) that the n96 wouldn't do as well as nokia thought it would do. I can't for the life of me, think why nokia thought this thing would sell in numbers given that the dvb-h isn't available in the uk and some other places, and that it hardly sets itself apart from the n95/8gig , with the exception of more internal memory and a card slot...so it has fp2..meh.
For me, as well as the tube, the n85 is going to sell alot imo...and i think we'll see alot more n-series handsets with bigger screens like the n85. |

funny thing is. DVB-H is in Qatar.
Qatar was the first country in the Middle East with it, HOWEVER Nokia's flavour of DVB-H isn't compatible! So all networks that have anything to do with it are having to modify it to work with the N96 lol...
(where as all other phones work out of the box)

I'm confused about where the N96 fits into the market. It really can't justify a 30% price increase over the N95 8GB and certainly not 125% increase over the original N95 at NZ prices. I find the styling very boring - an attempt to attract iPhone customers but without the gee-whizz things that the iPhone does well. And it's not actually any thinner than a N95 8GB.
I can see why owners are bringing them back.
In fact Nokia styling has been way off for years now and shows no sign of improving. Coupled with the high prices the charge in NZ, they really are trading on reputation IMO.
I did like the styling of the 6234 (I even bought one) the 5310 and the N95 range but the UI is still average.

yeh n96 is quite dissapointing at first, but after a few days, it starts to work well, and i dont htink MWEB is talking about 5800, but the N version of it and the next X(since 5800 is coming out earlier).

I personally don't mind for those die hard fans who r gonna shell out money on n96, cuz that would eventually awaken them to look out for other bands as well .
