Right, if you read my other post you may know that I've started working, but I have a slight concern which I don't really know how to sort, of if I should sort it at all and maybe just leave it for a while.

Basically, I started working on Wed and I've not been given any documents or been told anything at all about pay.
I was told at the 2nd interview/job offer that I would be on £5.75 an hour, but that's it.
There's no clock in/out system or anything, I just show up at 8.30 and start working, and then gone home at 5pm.
Next week I'm working 6 days, not 5 days.

My problem is, if I'm not clocking in or out or anything, how do they know how many days/hours I've worked? They won't know how much to pay me.

The only thing I can think is that they are going to put me on a set pay per month maybe?

Should I bring this up on monday?

I was thinking maybe ask one of the managers if I can have a quick word when he's got 5mins and discuss:

My till account
Name tag
Uniform
Pay

For pay, I'd drop it in to the conversation like, "Oh ye, is there a clocking in/out system so you know how many days/hours i've worked?"

Would that be ok to ask do you think, not too rude?

Or should I leave it till the end of the month and see what happens?

Just I feel like I am actually going to be working more days than I am actually being paid for.

Thanks

True mate, I also look at it this way, at the end of the day, everyone is at work for 1 reason...to earn money.

So it's pretty important that I find out really.

I guarantee I'll get there monday, put off asking and then I'm working in a different store until saturday lol.

Will have to man up and just ask.

Ok, I'll just stop you before you risk making yourself look like a little bit of a tit, only a little bit mind, cause you don't know any different so it's not your fault

With retail jobs, infact vast majority of jobs, you don't really 'clock' in or out. Managers are there to do that, manager their staff. They know what your weekly contracted hours are, they know how much to pay you as a result, and thats how much you get paid each month.

Say your contract is 16 hours a week, 16 x £5.75 = £92/week. £92 x 4 = £368/month, depends if they pay you 4-weekly or monthly really.

If you do overtime, ie that 6th day your doing, they count that as overtime, and put it in on top.

Most places tend to have a work roster, probably in the mangers office somewhere, which shows who's working what days and what times, and they spend hours juggleing everyone about so they all slot together like a jigsaw, to make sure the store has enough staff at the right times.

When they put you in extra hours, they most likely make a note and add it to your pay.

Where I work, we have to put it in online ourselves, submit it to my manager and then they authorise it, but when it was The Link, it was done automatically by the manager putting in the overtime off the roster online and authorising it himself.

I really wouldn't worry about it, they know what they're doing and they're not going to make you work for nothing

If they need to ask you anything about it, they'll come to you, you could ask them if you like, but it is kinda of should you/shouldn't you when it comes to new (and first) job ettiquite etc.

Hope that helps

That helped loads mate thanks, I agree with the should I, shouldn't I bit because money is a bit of a touchy subject especially as I'm so new.

There is a thing on the wall with what days people are working and their times but I'm not on it.

Also, the sheet with my bank details on...It's still attached to my training sheet which he told me I would keep for 3 months lol.

So do you think on Monday I should just say "Do you need me to cut of this back page and give it to you"

otherwise he won't have my bank details lol.

Thanks very much for the reply.

I'll say the above (if you agree with it) but I won't say any more, I'll wait till the end of the month or something and see what happens.

I work 48h a week x £5.75ph

48hrs/week? Bloody hell they've got you good haven't they, thats at least 10 hours longer than a normal 9-5 monday-friday job (usually about 38 hours from what I gather), so you're going to be rolling in it matey

Over £1100 a month isn't bad, but it'll be bloody hard work

I suppose yeah that'd be the best thing to say, it's just a case of finding the right time, I mean to be fair you are new to the job, and first job or not they should be happy to help

I think that's right, I work 8.30am to 5pm 6 days a week one week, then 5 days a week the next week, then repeat.

Ok, I'll ask if he needs me to cut off the form on monday with my details on and see what he says
Working late on Monday, 11.30am till 8.30pm, which is actually a pain...as I've got to be up about 6am on tue lol.

Hmmm, you wanna be carefull that their not taking advantage of you as the new boy by the sounds of it...

Working that many hours, that close together, I'm fairly certain if your doing 6 days a week one week, and 5 days a week the next, then something like every 3 or 4 weeks you should have 3 days off rather than 2 etc.

Dunno quite where the law stands on that one tbh, but if you're happy to do it then it's all money.

Don't be afraid to say no or question their rosters though, like if your working a long, late day one day and the following day you've got to be up at the crack of dawn, after a few weeks I reckon you'd be ok with asking them if you could do a different shift here and there, if that's ok with them. Just explain your simply getting too tired in the morning, even if you go to bed really early the night before, because of the times your starting and finishing.

It's only for 3 days mate, basically our store is very quite 60% of the time, so they are sending me to Norwich store where it's 3 times as big and way way busier all day so I can get a lot of hands on experience.

And, as you can see by my other post, I can't drive there lol, so I'm having to get a train there.

Now, I have to be there for around 9 (though he said because of the distance I can get there for around 9.30, and leave so that I get home for 5...not leave work at 5).

Takes 1h by train which means,

Get up at 6.30am
Get breakfast and leave at 7am, get the 7.20 (around then) train and arrive around 8.20am
Walk to store and get there around 8.50 (I have no idea where the store is! I have to find it on the day).

Actually, I can probably get up half hour later, but tbh I think I'll probably aim to get there around 10 and leave at around 4-4.30pm, because I'm simply not getting up that early.

I'ma try and get directions tomorrow night, wonder if I can use the maps option on my ipod touch?

But ye, that's only for tue, wed, thur, friday off, then for the rest of my time I;m working at the local store, which is why I'm just going to button down and do it.

Im doing some Voluntary work whilst I get a Fulltime job for Save the Children, our shop is the most successful store gaining incomes in a day you wouldn't beleive and with the credit crunch going about were grabbing alot more custom

btw I normally work about 3 days per week and my boss takes the biscuit too!

I think you could also ask other colleages if there is any method of clocking in. We normally sign something to state were in incase of a fire etc
