i have a sony vaio n365
and suddenly my usb ports have stopped working
if i plug in a device, it gets power, for example my mouse will get power and i c the laser turned on and stuff but when i use it, it doesnt work..and it doesnt install either..similar is the case with my flash drive..when i plug it in, it blinks once and den thats it..and same with my ipod
secondly, when i click shut down it goes to the screen where it says 'Shutting Down' and it just stays there untill i press and hold the power button OR the battery runs out..
so help me out guyz..i have no idea y its happening..is it cuz i only have 4 gigs of space left on my hard drive?

Could be windows problem or a hardware problem.
What OS are you using?

Sounds like your laptop is royally screwed...
Check that the USBs are actually there in your hardware manager (?) You can find it through the control panel.
As for not accepting new hardware, I had the same problem with my old XP machine. That turned out to have a corrupt boot sector - and I think the only way that could go was straight into the bin. If it's not accepting new software either, than you could have the same problem on your hands.

Even without creating one on your own , there will be automatic restore points created.

If the power's coming through and but the OS isn't seeing it, then do what totalgsm just said.
Backup, format and reinstall.
If that doesn't work - it might need a bit more looking at.

try getting hold of a linux live cd and see if your mouse works on it; if it does then it's a vista problem...

He said mouse , just to test if it is a issue with the port.
Because you can run that version of linux from the CD/DVD.
You can install Windows to another drive and you will get the dual boot option.
