I've bought a BST-40 from ebay, which was sold as original, it has a hologram and everything, but before risking to melt my phone or cause a fire are there ways to check if this battery is really a genuine SE battery. I don't mind if its a refurbished one, but fake would mean I will return the battery for a refund.

The item is still up for grabs as the seller has more than one piece: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170268930236

What do you think ?

The only way to tell is put it in your phone and charge it. If it says charging alien battery then its fake, but if it says optimised charging its real

I'm not sure.... because a friend bought a Chinese battery for his K310.... and it doesn't say : Charging Alien Battery....

Maybe you should look on the details of the battery design [addsig]

Oh nice, didn't know about the Alien Battery thing! I will take some detailed pictures after trying to charge it. Its due in my mailbox this morning. Depending on the mail man, sometimes they come at 9am sometimes at 11am. Guess that is why they call it Royal Mail, they royally take their time

Alright the battery has arrived. No hologram on it, a Google image search on BST-40 also shows a lot with and without hologram. The phone says optimized charging, and as expected its a little bit thicker than the BST-33.It is an 07W30, with S/N and the font is very crisp and looks exaclty like the font on the BST-33. Will take some pictures and upload now.

None of my BST-33 has a hologram and doing an image search on Google results in a lot of pictures with different stickers with and without holograms. There is no way to verify with the serial number or something? Can always return it if it turn out to be a fake. Just didn't want to fork out a lot of cash for a brand new BST-40. My guess is that this one is not brand new but refurbished. If anyone has more tips/info on howto see if it real or fake let me know!
Cheers.

Edit:
Ok, I've found a website sellign the exact same battery, with the same serial, product number and build date, but without the SE name. So I guess I got a fake. Well for the price I could've known, I will leave a negative feedback tho, as it is not a real SE battery and not brand new. But returning it or getting a refund is useless, as I will have to pay shipping (2 quid) and wont get all the money back, just the battery value not the p&p, so in the end I might get 1 quid back and no battery. I'll keep it and hope it will be good to me. Some of these fakes are quite good, I've got a fake Nokia battery in my MP4 players which lasts longer than an original Nokia battery.

Does anyone know if each battery gets a unique serial, or is it done per batch, say 10.000 batteries with the same serial? I have a couple BST-33 and 2 of them are from the same year and week, and have different serials. Anyone can shine some light on this?

Hi, my SE W710 came with a BST-37 and it doesn't have an hologram, so, the BST-33 not having it doesn't mean it's fake....

Yeah I tought so too.

So then the serial of the fake battery is used a LOT. I've seen the same serial on generic batteries on some websites. Guess these counterfeiters can't afford the machines that engrave/laser a new serial in each battery. So they print 50 miles of stickers with the same serial, the seller on ebay.com told me all his battery have the same serial and his supplier told him the serial does not change for each batch. These are being sold as genuine, some have holograms too.

In the end we're the ones losing out with inferior batteries in our phones that could lead to more serious problems as overheating and maybe even start a fire. Its sad to know most people that order from these sellers (Who might not even know they sell fakes too) are thinking they got the real thing, because it looks real, has a hologram and everything.

I wish SE would do something about the misuse of their logo and brand name. I will be returning my battery to the seller and expect a full refund including my postage costs, he was a bit surprised when I told him each serial should be unique.

Lesson learned: do not buy SE stuff from ebay as 99.99% is probably fake.

I agree. It may only have only 1 number/letter changed but it's different . Also, don't rely on the "alien battery" warning cuz it's removed in some phones.
