I bought a Nokia 5310 a few days ago.

I know, I'm an SE fan yada yada! I'm not about to jump ship, SE is still my favourite phone OEM, but just lately I was looking for a dedicated MP3 player that could display images, music videos and mp3's.

I was looking at a Sony NWZA826KB, 4GB, QVGA screen, Bluetooth A2DP.

Then I noticed the Nokia 5310: It has 1GB memory card (but expandable to 16 and probably 32GB), QVGA screen, Bluetooth A2DP. PLUS it has a FM radio, and non music features such as phone, internet browser, camera, games, flight mode (to save power when in "dedicated mp3player" mode), 3.5mm headphone socket, and I already have an 8GB microsdhc card to put in it.

The 5310 also has nice big dedicated music buttons that make it even more like a dedicated player. I was also looking at a W610 ($180), but in the end the 5310 is much smaller and lighter and has a 3.5mm socket.

Price of Sony player: $229
Price of Nokia music phone: $229

So I got the Nokia! It's pretty much the same size as the Sony player, but a little heavier (58g to 71g).

It makes quite a nice little mp3 player.

I didn't get this for use as a phone, but as an internet capable mp3 player.

It runs Opera Mini just as well as my W910, but the screen size is much smaller. 90% of my internet access is through my main handset (atm the W910). It's just hanndy to have internet capability on a dedicated mp3 player.

@Muhammad-Oli, don't worry, I'm still very much an SE fan. s40 has some advantages over a200, but I still much prefer SE overall.

@qvga, I was never a Nokia fanboy anway so I wouldn't be going back. You know, just because I generally prefer SE UI and design, this does not mean I am an SE fanboy I get tared with that brush because I dare to argue pro SE stances when I think it's warranted. Just because Nokia diehards don't agree with me doesn't mean I must be a fanboy. I'm capable of recognising the good and the bad on both sides of the fence.

@GUCCI.011, I like the 5310 because as a dedicated mplayer it rules, with A2DP, games and internet, 3.5mm socket and large dedicated music buttons. Keypad is excellent which makes adding playlists or browsing the web a pleasure.

However it's s40 has some serious disadvantages compared to SE A200. No bluetooth in flight mode sucks, no task manager, can't minimise java apps. Physical factors against the 5310 - the screen is way too small, the headset is too bulky.

There is not a music phone anywhere (even W890) that is smaller and lighter. It's an absolute gem as a music player. However the W910 is a much more flexible phone. Even say a W610 which competes with the 5310 is a much better option for a feature phone that needs more than just good music features.

But you said W910 was a very capable MP3 player. How does it compare to 5310, in sound quality

I've used both these phones aswell, the nokia has the edge in sound quality, More dynamic/punchy sound and goes quite a bit louder than the w910i

not at all. The S40 does have some advantages over A200, but overall it's advantages are outweighed by it's disadvantages.

Just because I don't claim one is all bad and one is all good doesn't make it a contradiction.

@qvga, yes music quality is a little better than W910 though I consider both pretty good. The 5310 has a DSP which shows in the audio quality. I don't find the volume much better, however the external speaker is stereo and better quality and louder.

However the player ergonomics let the 5310 down - in this area the W910 wins hands down. Mind you I haven't tried kd player on the 5310, if it works well then it will bring the ergonomics exactly into line with the W910 (using kd player).

And keep in mind that even if kd player works fine on the 5310, you can't minimise java apps so using kdplayer means I can't use any other part of the 5310, which is a pretty severe limitation.

because it's bigger than what I need for this purpose, and twice as expensive. I do plan to get an ipod touch, but not to replace the 5310. The 5310 size (for it's features) is tiny.

the main menu view can be changed between list views and grid, the standby screen is slightly easier to access as well as easy on the eye (compared to the shortcut list on A200), but of course is only accessible from the standby screen. Grid icons can have names shown or not shown (user preference).

Right and left softkeys are configurable for standby mode.

Flight mode can be enabled without restarting the phone. Profiles (except flight mode) can be set to a timer, ie: after a certain amount of time the profile reverts to the previously chosen profile.

However, SE A200 overall has more advantages for example activity button, minimise music or java, shortcut list accessible from most menus, better picture viewing options, better playlist editor, better status bar displays, better clock display, better camera UI and other things.

Really A200 is far superior in my view, however if anything about s40 that SE should adopt it is the flight mode without restart option.
