Right, I am baffled. Why on earth do people work? I have now been working properly now for over a month, and I cant work it out.

My obvious answer is money, however my job only just covers living costs... also there are so many other ways to make money and achieve an equal level of living.

What really annoys me is 9-5 though, you get up early work all day then collapse at home tired as hell... yeh you can go for a run after or go to the gym do a tesco shop but the rest of the day is gone.

You end up thinking weekends are great, and tbh they aint all that, like sundays everything is closed... so you end up doing house work.

I really don't understand this concept, it is so messed up...

Well, Try doing 7pm until 7am 5days a week, see how your life dissappears with no weekends off ever

Ive not long got in and if i didnt have to wake up at 12 id probs be in bed until 4pm lol.

Got a stretch of 9days straight starting saturday, should be fun.

Also as regards to living costs it all boils down to how much your making really lol

Some people work 9-5 and earn millions, their jobs covers more than just living costs. So for them there is no point of having to do alternate things to make money.

Luke, if you've got a better bloody idea for how the world can go round, please be my guest! You're not the only person in the world who works, and if you're only doing 9-5 mon-fri count yourself bloody lucky thats all you do!
My opinions on this forum are that of my own and not of the company I work for.

Think yourself lucky with 9-5, I work shifts now (Including bank holidays and Christmas) and miss having weekends off, miss the bank holiday 'vibe'. There's nothing worse than getting up at some stupid hour on a Sunday morning and hearing some stupid, chirpy DJ saying how cold, wet and miserable it is outside but hey, it's the weekend and you can stay in bed! No, I can't!!! :

I suspect Luke that you're like me, you're in a job which you don't like. You (and I for that matter!) need to find a job that you're happier in, makes getting up for it that bit easier and less of a hassle. Hopefully you'll find your nice fairly quickly, I'm now 30 and still don't have a clue about what I want to do for a career!

I work mon-wed 8.30am - 5.30pm, thurs 8.30am - 7pm, fri 8.30am - 5pm and every other saturday 9.30am - 4pm. Piece of piss lol, the only day i really don't like is thurs, that extra hour and half can be a drag sometimes.

I'm grateful that I only work these hours, I used to be in the hotel trade for 6years previous to this, now thats where u end up doing about 70hrs a week.

That's life i guess, buy a lottery ticket and keep your fingers crossed if you don't like working.

It all depends on what you do, i'm fortunate to have a great job and even better colleagues.

I retired at 27, 20 years ago, never had a job where i did not watch the clock and pray for 5pm to arrive faster .

ha ha, you guys are all foaming!

I said I work 9-5 doesn't mean thats all I work. Anyhoo Im not complaining I have to work, I am asking why people do it? My job pays bad but looks great on the CV and gives me lots of experience. I also have to do it for uni, out of choice it is not something I would choose to do.

And yes I do have a few ideas so I don't have to work 9-5

Jesus life could be worse. When your working all those hours think about something to look forward to like a holiday you can save for. That makes it worth working. And all your home comforts think yourself your lucky you have money and a job. I work as a lower paid manager in a 4 star hotel. I have to work overtime alot and cover sickness and i quite often do back to back shifts. I do late shifts then early next day that kills you. But when your days come you really make the most of it. Though quite often is the case with hotels you get called in on some days off. After a working long shifts sometimes i love it cos being at home too much is boring to me. I would rather be out working or doing something but thats just me. I come on this site inbetween times and when on the move. Why not be your own boss and do something like run your own business and work your own hours. Weekends mean nothing to me i can go out anytime in the week and have fun. And working weekends and having week days off you can do things in the week you cant sometimes do on weekends. Think about the Japanese they work the longest hours anywhere in the world.
