O2 Retention v Vodafone! Help guys! |

Hi guys n girls,
Its been ages since I last posted on these forums, but luckily things don't change too much. Anyways, to the point, I'm now at the end of my 12 month contract with O2 on £35pm for 500 mins 1000texts rollover with my K850. This has been a rip-off due to me not even getting close to using all of this, plus my massive data bills for surfing the mobile web have made this a painful and expensive year, and so its time for me to upgrade. Now having done a little shopping around today I have come back with 3 juicy offers and just wanted to put them to everyone to get some feedback. I only need around 300 mins and 400 texts but unlmited browsing is essential and a new phone would be nice (must be better then the K850...)
Offer #1 Vodafone: Free Nokia N95 8Gb £30pm 600mins unlimited texts and unlimited web browsing on an 18 month contract.
Offer #2 O2 Retention: Free SE C902, £27pm 600 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited browsing on an 18 month contract.
Offer #3 O2: No phone, O2 Simplicity £20pm.
I'm sorely tempted by the Vodafone offer but having never been with them could I get some feedback on the qaulity of coverage, customer service etc The O2 retentions dept told me that they had no N95's in stock for around a further 2months (but I can upgrade in-store for £150!!!!), so I think that they're trying to fob me off with a C902...
Any thoughts on the above would be useful.
Thanks in advance!

Looking at those deals i would the O2 one as its slightly cheaper but gives same amount in the deal. But it all depends aswell what you want in a phone. |

If you've never been with Vodafone, I would strongly advise getting hold of a Vodafone SIM and put it in your phone, then try it out for a while and see what the signal is like. The signal checks on the networks' sites are usually wrong, so it's best to actually try a SIM out at home, in the workplace etc.
The last thing you want to do is sign up for a contract then find you can't get a signal!

Thanks guys,
@bonovox
You're right it is slightly cheaper, but I am considering whether that £3 extra might justify all the extra that comes with the N95... Also, out of interest, is Vodafone Live a better online service in terms of offerings and service then O2 active?
@shanesspencer
I currently live in the centre of London, so I'm imagining that it shouldn't be a problem, unless you've heard or experienced different?.
Cheers again

When i was with Vodafone many moons ago i found that Vodafone Live had some of the best and widest choice of content. Dont know about it now im sure its improved even more. Its better O2 Active. I hardly ever use O2 Active on my account. |

Not been with o2 but have been with Tmobile, then Orange and now Vodafone. Vodafone has by far been the best signal and I would highly recomend for that.

I think on the face of it, considering my mobile iternet usage, my curiosity in mobile apps and actually the need for some basic GPs tools, I'm going to go with Vodafone, I'll try convicing O2 once again, but if they say no, then I'm off and I won't be back until Appl eosrts the iPhone out. Now does anyone have any good info on unbranding theat crappy vodafone software?
Cheers

On the N95-8gb its not too bad... you will have a voda stamp on the back of fone and you can debrand the software easily enough... Then your done.... But be aware of warranty issues...
Cheers

N95 8GIG is being withdrawn to be honest with you. All networks are going to stop doing it. If i was you, i would go for the sim only plan, u can get them to throw in free data with it, and wait until the handset you really wants come out then go for it. The c902 we know all its problems etc, the N95 8GIG i would pass on it, since its going to be taken off the market soon on all networks due to the N96 etc coming out, so i would wait a bit n go on sim only if i was u.

Yes Vodafone signal is second to none. I have heard more complaints about O2 signal than Voda. Anyway yes the N95 i have played with a live one in a Voda store and its hardly got any branding at all. Does not have any Voda icons except the Voda Live icon. Nice phone too if slightly ugly in my opinion. |

To be honest, I really would like a new phone, so thats why I'm a little apprhensive to getting the SIM only plans although they are great value. I'm fairly sure that I read elsewhere that the N95 isn't being withdrawn but will continue to be sold alonside the N96. Ultimately, I'm in no position to afford the N96 when it arrives, as imagine it will be almost iPhone-esque in its pricing ~£100-150. I appreciate the advice people, and think I'm around 98% sure that I will go to Vodafone but I will sleep on it and see if anybody adds anything interesting overnight.
Thanks again!

Better do some and then speak. C902 is one bloody rock solid and stable phone. |

Yes its good to hear about good experiences with the C902. Its given SE a better image compared with the K850i. The N95 whilst great i am still shocked that its just not coming down in price. Why. |

After having used a C902 today, I was less than impressed with how tiny the screen is! It really is only because of that that I'm not really considering it...

Because lot of people still want it. Simple as that really. The price has come down, it just hasn't fallen through the floor. The basic N95 is now £280 sim-free I believe, compared to about £450 when it first came out. The 8GB has dropped to £380 ish. Whether they affect the N96 sales, who knows, as the N96 is nothing more than the N95 with more memory and the DVB-H TV Tuner. Not really an upgrade at all, so getting an N95 8GB isn't exactly living in the past.
The C902 is a very good feature phone, but again depends on what you class as important in a device. (i.e. Smartphone power vs. Feature phone usability). I have seen quite a few people mention on this site re-booting problems with this phone, but the Nokia is not exactly problem free either.
In its favour, as you've noticed, the N95 has a much bigger screen and with it, better browsing potential. If you do use the Net a lot, I'd go with the Nokia. The C902 is more limited in its software and by that tiny screen in this department.
As for the network I've been using Vodafone on the Sim-Only deal for a while now and the signal and reliability has been second to none. Buying a sim and trying it out is a very good idea. I've used the T-Mobile coverage check before, and it was nothing like what I actually could pick up.
Hope this has helped make you make a choice!
