I've heard that the coming of the X1 would phase out the P-series or at least give way for the p-series to become a playstation phone. Anyone able to confirm?

Very possible.
It almost 1,5 year after last P announced (P1) and there are no signs that it will change. X1 is promoted as SE's mega phone.
They damaged the best what they had - Pseries.

The P series died the day they launched the P990 in its forlorn state. The P1 was only a half-hearted attempt to revive it, warming over the remains of the M600 and P990 and reselling the same patched-up technology again.

The last really successful P series was the P910, and even that was only a rehash. P800 FTW.
