Stopped working just before my trip to italy grrr.

Anyway here are the symtoms:

When plugged into computer, computer sometimes reads it as IPOD, or a camera. Itunes wont recognise it at all. Also on the ipod touch if I go on music of videos is just takes me back to the main menu. So any ideas what to do? Its still in warranty so am I gonna have to get a new one?

what firmware version you running, and is it jailbroken? Also have you tried restoring it in itunes?

If both the touch and itunes are behaving irrationally, i would say try restoring the touch and also reinstalling itunes as well to see if that corrects the prob. If it doesnt, i'd just take it to the nearest Apple authorised repair centre and get it replaced

If you really want it on your trip, get to a Genius Bar in an Apple Store and they'll do a like for like swap.
My 5.5G was letting in dust because the front cover was coming loose at the top and the swap took all of about 10 mins to sort out.
ps. you need to book an appointment beforehand if you're going to the Regent St. store.

Upon searching google there were a number of people with similar problems. As to resetting the software can I do that on the ipod touch itself?

I was having problems with the jailbroken ipod so I thought I might aswel just upgrade as I only use it for listning to music so it should probably have the latest firmware on. Also I cant restore it in itunes because itunes wont recoggnise it

I have tried re-installing itunes and restarting my computer about 5 times now

Yep! I bought my 'Pod from Comet.
If it's Apple's hardware, it's their responsibility.

If itunes wont recognise it, try putting it in to DFU mode (whether manually, or using a prog like ZiPhone) and see if itunes picks it up then

edit: oh and by the way, Arien is correct, Apple have to take on the warranty for repair/replacement, no matter where you bought it. I have just had my touch replaced at the nearest authorised Apple repair centre (not even an Apple Shop)
