(topic taken from a post I made)

I'd love to join the police force in any way at all but I've applied before and then didn't hear back, and tbh I'm expecting the same thing this time.

Been talking to my mum because I'm getting lost, I'm only good at IT and I can't get a job in that area, and I'm desperate not to spend the next few years working somewhere like poundland or tesco.
So I need to do something and fast.

She wants me to follow her best friends son who joined the RAF when he was 17, I'm 20 so I'm not too old.

We've just been looking at jobs they have available, and their police force and fire department require a minimum of a G grade GCSE maths and English, well I got C in English and F in maths, so I'm ok there!

There are also some other jobs I could see myself doing, so I'm going to read in to them tomorrow and then phone up the nearest RAF office and ask if I can make an appointment to go see them and talk about a possible career in the RAF.

I'm quite excited about it, this time last week I was getting application forms for my local theme park and corner shop as I was kinda getting to the giving up stage, now I'm in the "Change my whole life" mood.

Problem is though, people tend to say "it's impossible to get in so I wouldn't bother" or "It's very hard" etc etc, negative comments which put me off as I'm your average joe and there's always going to be someone better then me.

So before I phone the RAF tomorrow, anyone any advice?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

A tiny problem I have, and I'm not sure if it's a problem, but I've already booked and paid for a 3 week holiday to florida in November for my birthday....I really hope anything I do doesn't conflict lol.

Lol I did think that, but because all are completely different areas I needed different advice.

For example some people may see the topic RAF and reply, but see the Police force topic and it won't be of interest to them.

Also I think I'm getting in to a bit of a panic lol, 20...no job, no idea what I want to do and I've never worked in my life.

Most Service Recruiting Offices look after all the services. Why not look at the Navy as well as the RAF? I was in the RN for nearly 30 years and still work for the MOD. Did me no harm whatsoever.
Be prepared to look at other jobs rather than just IT!

Exactly the same here mate, my brother does work and he's 12, my sister works 2 jobs and goes to uni, I spend my days walking the dog, cutting the grass and looking at crappy jobs!

If I continue like this, no way will I be able to get money for a house etc.

I'm not just looking at IT jobs, infact, I actually want to join their police force, then their fire department, and then if they fall through, an IT job.
So IT is down the list, I want a job that keeps me fit and active and that really helps people.

Go to the recruiting office and ask about jobs. You don't have to sign up there and then - in fact I believe you can join up and still leave after about six months if it doesn't suite you.
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Yer, I've planned a trip down to Norwich to go to the office, nearest one is about 25miles away so I can't just pop down there, would have to make it a day thing.

On their site it said to phone them and arrange an initial interview which I did and she said the 1st step is to order the information pack, which I said I just did and she said that when it comes through, it will have a reference number on it, when the pack arrives, phone them back up and quote the reference number, so I'll do that.

Think is, I clicked the Send me more info button after filling my details in, and it just took me to their main page, it didn't say anything about sending the stuff out to me, although when I filled it all in again it says that I've already done it once and can't do it again, so hopefully it will arrive within the next 10 days like she said.

Hoping it arrived by Next Wednesday, as then I can explain to the job centre that they don't need to put me on some crappy YMCA course, then I'm off to Norwich Wed night anyway, so plan to get there around 4pm which gives me an hour to talk to them, grab dinner then go to the cinema.

But I've read around on their site, looked at all the info etc and can deff see myself doing it.

EDIT:

Quick question, when you sign up, does anyone know how long it then takes from there to get the ball rolling, is it like 6 months-1year or is like like 4-6 weeks.
Because I need to sort out college courses if it's going to take 6-12 months.

Thanks

Question for them really..... you could say how long is a ball of string? Different services, different jobs, different starting times.

Yer very true mate, I'm most keen in the police part, been trying to get in to the force here, infact I have another 15 page application form to fill in for the police force here which has to be done by Aug 31st but don't want to fill it all in if I'm off to do something else.

Have to admit, I'd be gutted if they turned round and said they don't need people because it's kinda my last hope really, been trying to get a job for around 8 months and always thought I could count on the RAF to get me to do something lol, next week will tell i guess.
Not bad pay either, just over £17k, but tbh it could be 8k and I'd still apply, it's not about the money, it's about the experience etc and doing something completely different.

This time last year, if someone asked me if I'd want to do ANYTHING physical for work or fun I would have laughed so much, now it's what I'd love to do, how time changes people eh.

Whatever happens, you go to RAF college Cranwell for initial training which takes just over a month as far as i'm aware.

What are you thinking of doing?

Good Luck.

This:

RAF Police

Protect Service personnel, assets and information. Prevent and detect crime, support discipline and provide security advice
2 GCSEs/SCEs

£17,450
Minimum age: 18
Category: Airmen/airwomen

Or

This:

Firefighter

Save the lives of aircrew in emergencies and provide the station with firefighting services

£16,200
Minimum age: 17.5
Category: Airmen/airwomen

But the pack I applied for was the police one as I'd really love to do that, also early on they say you get the chance to train as a dog handler which I want to do

Yer I read once you get past the first interview I think it is, you spend 9 weeks in Buckinghamshire or something.

I would side with the Police rather than the Fire, but thats my opinion.
