Is hardware modding possible? |

Software modding has been around and has transcended our devices beyond their intended capacities. But there's so much that software can do when there are hardware limitations. I would stay on with my P990 for probably another year if it had more RAM and HSDPA. So I'm just wondering, has anyone been crazy/creative/resourceful enough to mod the hardware of any of their devices with success?

i think nobody did it. but whynot? a experienced computer and electronics engineer can do it. |

If thier were someone willing to offer this service they would have a steady line of customers. Imagine being able to hang on to your favorite cell an be able to mod it to your specific needs |

Exactly, just like how we can customize our computers, aren't our phones computers too? How I wish, but in this whole 6 billion+ packed world, absolutely none?

Somethign I wondered myself as well...
I mean, changing the cpu for example? If the instructionset is the same and a faster cpu is available why wouldn't it be possible? It would require some mad soldering skills ofcourse hehe, but 'basic' things as changing cpu or ram should indeed be possible shouldn't it... |

yea, example, p990i's cpu is arm xxxxx i remember. you should change it with acpu has the same structure. and you'll need to mod the bios or something doing the same job on phones board. |

and this isnt somthing like replacing your pc's rams or cpu. it's something like replacing your pc's mainboard's northbrigde. you'll need to do more modifications to use new replaced parts power. example, you have 200mhz cpu on p990 and youve replaced it with a 400mhz one. if it works, it should work at 200mhz i think. |

Guys, what you are saying is not possible. Have any of you actually seen the motherboard of the P990? Changing the CPU etc. is out of the question. I was looking to see if more RAM could be added, perhaps by piggy back to the one on board, but you are more likely to damage the board. Remember that the board itself is multilayer with surface mount devices.
Before even discussing the possibility of hw upgrades, we should try to get our hands on P990 schematics to see if an additional 64 MB is even supported - we need an extra data line for this.
Having said this, there are geniuses out there who may figure a way to do the impossible. I'd just love to have a P990 with 128 MB RAM, it would beat any device currently available.

Well, of course it seems impossible, but then again many of man's greatest accomplishments have attributed themselves to conquering the seemingly impossible. I'm just wondering if there are people out there who have outdone themselves in this respect, and while knowing some one who has modded their P990 would be a dream come true, I'm also interested to know if there have been any mods for any phone for that matter that has been done successfuly in the past. If no one here has done it, just someone you know of would do

I know that way back in the age of the Nokia 8210, there was a hw modification that allowed 2 SIM cards to be used with that phone, not simultaneously though - oh, and the keyboard lights could be replaced to blue ones 
I don't know if it's fake (I had a feeling it could be fake) but last year there was a video of a hw modification on the P990 that allowed linux to be installed.

I remember the blue led thing on 8210.
I think that the idea was to give it a 8850'ish look which was actually the same phone, only in a different casing and, yeah, different leds.

Hw mod for Linux? Wouldn't a good ol' sw mod do the trick? Any info on which component they modded to get Linux running? But most importantly, is it genuine?

Yes, that was the one, good find @Myth.
I think what they are doing there is by-passing the internal ROM and booting from an external ROM, thus the soldering. But I have no idea how they got the screen drivers or the touch screen working. I'm skeptical due to these 2 reasons.
