A woman said to be 70 years of age has given birth to twins in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state after taking IVF treatment.
Omkari Panwar has no birth certificate but if her age is proven it would make her the world's oldest mother.
The twins, a boy and girl both weighing 2lbs, were delivered one month early by Caesarian section.
The couple were so desperate for a male heir that they spent their life savings and took out a bank loan for IVF.

Wow.. they'd almost be dead by the time the child is 10 ..
Know of a lady who bore a child through IVF at 63 and the child died in an accident.

Jeez, imagine her waiting for those kids at the school gate. She'd look like a great great grandmother picking them up.

Wow.. That was too harsh! I do not understand how this can be termed selfish. These folks are poor and if they were selfish, they would not bring another life to add to their misery. I would say this is nothing more than an intense desire to be parents.

What kind of life are these kids going to have? These people will no doubt be dead before the kids are 10, and even if they arent the kids will spend their childhood years looking after their parents. |

Well.. don't you think they would have thought about this before venturing into this? In any case, we do not know. But, I am sure they will have pondered over this and then took this decision.

I actually agree with both of you. In some communities having a male child is like having a king, children are the greatest gifts to some people.
Personally, I think things have changed so dramatically that people think twice before having kids. We are worse off now than 20 or 30 years ago and it's even worst for the poor. Considering their age this is seriously disturbing.
I honestly find this sad and tragic even though I understand their desire. To a certain extent it is selfish as HornyNick points out.

Do you think poor people with 6-7 kids, who are unable to feed them, actually thought about it before getting knocked up 7 times? No they dont, because of illiteracy.

| Well, afaik, this was an IVF procedure.. Before jumping the gun and blaming illiteracy, note that pregnancy at 70 is a high risk affair. So there is no question about the fact that this factor would have been considered. And performing an IVF is not as simple as going to a hospital and demanding the procedure to be done. On a 70 year old, its too risky. Only after ascertaining if the body is ready and capable of pregnancy will the doctors allow to proceed with such a procedure. Atleast this is better than female infanticide which is rampant. Also, there was no way the sex of the child could have been checked as sex fetal determination is prohibited by law here. Even if the parents were illiterate, the doctors ain't.
