Every time I walk into a dead zone were there isn't any reception the 3G icon appears to the right of the signal icon. Is this a bug or does this mean 3G may be avaliable on a roaming carrier?

Try making video call and you will see if it is a bug or 3G roaming

I think its a bug, as my phone does this too. Normally with me, if i'm somewhere where i cannot get signal from my carrier, but there is signal from another service provider, i get "Emerg. Calls Only" on the standby screen.

This is nothing. I get the 3G icon on my N73 out of the blue. The only thing is, there is no 3G network here.. Not till 2009 atleast......

@sirhackalot, in your case you get the icon while you're in a dead zone.. Correct? In my N73, i randomly see the 3G icon whilst i'm on a gsm network.. But, i do get the 3G sign when in a dead zone as well. Strange phenomenon.. And across rival brands. Maybe this is common?

Well maybe there is something with network frequencies and availability change that confuses the phone and making it show the 3G icon...

Yes.. Plausible when you're in a dead zone. But wierd when i'm on a Gsm network. Maybe they're testing 3G.

So its the network afterall? Os the lack of it probably that confuses the phone.. Surely, can't be a firmware issue as this is seen with both Nokia and SE in this case atleast.

Most likely the network GPRS was slower that internation standards when first released in Bermuda. And now with the release of EDGE mainly for Blackberry devices it's seems now on par with GPRS standards. I guess when 3G is introduced I will get to see what EDGE really is like! LOL

What kind of speeds did you receive? With and without edge? I average 5kBps with Gprs and 20 to 38 kBps with Edge here in India. Multiply by 8 for speed in kbits

Ok.. My speeds are from the connection manager app in the phone.. Whats the link for speedtest (for mobile devices)? I'm on the phone browser.. Not on a pc!
