it's not illegal, but if a phone is under warranty it will be voided. you go to someone who offers unlocking (usually a market trader or small independent dealer) and pay them some money and they do it for you. i'm sure it would be possible to lock it back, as it's only some software that is being altered, but finding someone to do it for you will be very hard. i doubt the market guys will have the equipment, and se repair centres wouldn't do it. remember, se does not endorse unlocking, and if you void your warranty you will have to pay for ALL future repairs, even if they would normally be supported by a warranty. my advice is to wait till the phone is over 12 months old and has no warranty anyway.

To unlock your phone you either need to take it to a service center (which are hard to find in the US but are apparently abundant throughout other parts of the world), of buy a cable and download some software. You hook it up to the computer use the software and boom you get the code to unlock your phone - but have to pay for each phone you unlock. http://www.unlocking.net should be able to hook you up - they've got great prices on "logs".
Is it legal? This is "grey". If you bought your phone you own it. If you own it you should be able to do anything you want to it. If your carrier subsidised the phone then they likely made you sign a contract for twelve or more months. Unless theres a stipulation in that contract that requires you to keep the phone locked then I don't think you will have a problem. More over your question was "illegal". Breaking a contract is more of a civil matter than a criminal one. But I'm not a lawyer.
I don't know if its possible to lock your phone again - but why would you want to? |

like i said mate, it's not illegal, just unadvisable if your phone is in a warranty period.

All you need is the password. Just hit < * * < to get the unlock menu. Look at network it'll have a locked padlock if its locked. If you select network it'll display at the top the number of tries you get before your phone is permanently locked. The perm lock can be removed, but its better you not try to guess cause you're not going to come up with the right number. I heard that the network lock was specific to each phone. |

Short answer:
Buy a cable to hook to your phone (not the normal datacable)
Download unlocking software from unlocking or http://www.gsmlab.com/ericsson.gsm or anyone else that provides this service
Get a login for use of this software from the place you downloaded it from (each use is known as a log, each unlock is a log; logs cost money).
Turn off phone and hook it up to the cable (which is hooked to the computer)
Push read gdfs (or reset if you perm locked it to your carrier)
In the Codes: box, you'll be able to select the "NCK" if all worked well. There will be a number in that box, thats your unlock code. So it wasn't short |

If your phone is from T-Mobile they will give you the unlock code for free with no problems, just say you will be travelling abroad and want to use a local carrier. |

Don't be suprised if t-mobile gives you the wrong code, they gave me the wrong code 2 times and so my nokia 8290 will forever be locked to t-mobile, screw it its a piece of $hit anyway . |
