What will happen with the existing symbian devices? Will they get a firmware update? Is there hope for my slow W960? |

Updates, if any, come from the manufacturers, and not from the Symbian Foundation.

Any idea when a firmware update would be out? I'm already looking forward for the update. |

Isn't it so that uiq, s60 and other symbian versions will merge into 1 OS? Which means that SE will have to develop their firmwares based on that universal version. But will they do it for the older uiq phones? Will we finally have S60 apps running on our SE's ?

What next? A new UI, with touch support, and "forward compatibilty" with S60 (S60 Touch anyone?)
No compatibilty with UIQ either mentioned or implied. UIQ laying off most of their staff. UIQ, to all intents and purposes, ceasing to exist.
Will your UIQ phone get an update? Will pinky and perky be airborne?

No compability implied with UIQ3??? Here we go again...and please remember you are talking about something that is 2 YEARS AWAY, no one really knows how the app situation will be then.
Regarding updates for G700/G900 (at least), there´s no reason for they not to appear. Like mentioned in other thread, its SE that gives support to those phones, not UIQ

They (SE) seem to stop firmware development once they produce one that's relatively stable & that people don't complain too much about. I don't see, therefore, how this impacts at all on the future development of existing phones, it would have been minimal to non-existent in any case.
What I find way more interesting is the adoption of common standards & conventions for the development of all symbian apps, this can only enhance choice, thus competition, thus innovation on behalf of the manufacturers. Now we'll able to make direct comparisons between say a Nxx and a Pxx, in terms that actually mean something.

Ares, there are numerous official statements about the situation with S60 - apps designed for S60 will be forward compatible, that's been made absolutely clear. There has been absolutely no such statement regarding UIQ. None. No implication that UIQ apps will be supported or compatible in any way whatsoever. You can't avoid that, there's no other way of saying it, UIQ will not be compatible with the new platform.
If you disagree, please, post me one single scrap of a crumb of a quote from anybody involved in this deal that states otherwise.
and please remember you are talking about something that is 2 YEARS AWAY, no one really knows how the app situation will be then.
Nokia and others involved have been crystal clear on the fact that S60 apps being developed now will be compatible with the new UI in two years time (or whenever it's released). They've not said a word about UIQ, for very obvious reasons.
Just let it go. SE have.

Yep. Not to put too fine a point on it.
I think it's time for us all to just remember the happy times with our P800 and P900's, and move on. UIQ died with the first P990 to roll off the line, in any case.
For me, the old P800 was, and is, an amazing device. 6 odd years later, I don't recognise any of the current Symbian devices (UIQ or S60) as any relation to it - in fact, my WM powered Tytn II is the first phone in a while to really remind me of what I loved about UIQ devices in the first place - a no nonsense, no compromise, do-anything PDA and phone all in one.

I have to agree with Boinng here; looking at the support SE is giving (think firmware updates), I doubt UIQ will go on living after Moto's supposedly UIQ 4.0 device.
That might not be a bad thing though. At least someone (read: nokia) finally throws in their weight in favor of the symbian os, so the new foundation might turn out just fine. Perhaps as a blend of all the different interface versions we have now, so hopefully we'll see the UIQ interface concepts back.
Looking at Nokia's lack of touchscreen, I just hope that this won't be the end of touchscreen-enabled symbian devices. The Xperia is a hot piece of hardware, but the way things are with WM, I'd rather not have one.
@Dutchies: hey gasten! Naamloos, m'n vriendin heeft een W960 en die reageert eigenlijk best rap, misschien nog wel sneller dan m'n gepimpde P1. :S

Now what? Good question. First of all I will tenderly perform some preventive maintenance on my P900 and make sure it's stored properly. After all, P900, P990 and the P1 are all historic devices now. I may yet get a P1 towards the end of summer to last me another year or two.
I might just get a HTC Touch Pro if I didn't have this dislike of WM.
In short, I don't expect anything worthwhile before 2010, so I'll get the best price/performance device this year and hang on to it. |
