Looking at my past posts I have had a few negative things to say about K850 and N95. But I've been itching to upgrade. My key criteria were a better camera than my K800 and new functions to play with. Unfortunately nothing SE has to offer grabbed my attention - they were just boring. i.e. same interface, same everything just about. And, the photo quality of the K850 still doesn't impress me, nor does the creaky case, sharp edges and so on. So, after quite a few years being a die hard SE fan I have jumped ship. I have bought myself a Nokia N95 8gb.
All I have to say is that this phone walks over just about every aspect of all S.E. phones I have owned. I must have had my eyes shut thinking SE phones are superior - they are not. It's not until you use one of these phones for a couple of days that you realise how much you've been missing using SE devices. So, in complete honesty here is just of summary of what is better:
1) Screen - It's large and easy to read - even in daylight.
2) The Camera (even though lacking a real flash) is quite acceptable and far more customisable than SE. The flash on the K800 is overated – for some reason I would always get dark shots in a room that was reasonably well lit. Also, My K800 hated focusing on silver or shiny objects – not a problem with the N95.
3) Speaker output - 10,000% better than any SE.
4) Music Playback - Once you figure out how to use it properly - far better. None of that stupid hissing and noise reduction. And, the random play actually seems to read all your songs. I'm sure the SE doesn't handle large amounts of songs. I'm using the same selection of songs I had on my K800 and I now get songs that I haven’t heard for ages. I'm also not noticing repeated songs.
5) Earpiece Volume - vast improvement
6) Applications, applications, applications. You can do so much more with this. I've even downloaded a cool bit of Software that uses the Accelerometer as pedometer.
7) Customisation - you can customise anything - sounds, icon locations, etc.
Nokia Maps - not perfect but better than anything else I've seen.
9) Wireless Networking. How good is this I can use my home internet on the phone.
10) Phone book, scheduling all better.
11) The phone doesn’t have to reset to access the computer in data mode.
The only 2 annoyances I have are 1) you can't control volume once a Java game is launched. 2) Sliding the phone shut doesn't hang up.
If you are thinking about this phone I can highly recommend it. Battery life seems very good - I think with this model they really did iron out all the bugs of the 1st.

Welcome to Series 60 territory! Make yourselves comfortable. While you are still checking out the phone, why not look for free apps at:

Congratulations and good for you! I haven't bought from SE in three years myself, in fact, I bought a Motorola this year after being with SE from the beginning of the joint venture. SE just don't do it for many of us anymore, we keep waiting for something to wow us from them but it never comes and that's when we get fed up and try something else. One thing for sure there are many that are still going to leave if things stay the way they are at the moment.
It's not what you do or even how you do it but in what state of mind you do it: Dups! 2009 |

Congrats, you've bought the best specced phone on the market so I'm glad it lives up to expectations.
I won't be changing from SE, but I can understand why you would go for a N95 even without the 8Gig. Enjoy!

I still am under the beleif that Nokia havent developed that model enough. You might be getting a good standby from it but the majority of people I know despise the battery life. The day SE cannot deliver decent standby is the day I will change. Not before. To me, battery is key for all the things I use my phone for. I didnt buy it to use it for half the day...
But as I say - MOST people cannot stand the standby - not all.
Enjoy your Nokia tho!
SE you again soon! haha

Feel you mongoose, but some of us are still sticking around! Good luck though. By the way, anyone here knows how to upgrade N73 ME to the 2008 firmware without using the Nokia update service because of my poor internet connection.

I am in a very similar position having recently bought the Nokia n95 8gb - my first nokia in over 10 years!
Firstly, the battery issues apply to the n95 not the n95 8gb. I can use the phone for approx 2 days without re-charging.
More generally, I have to say that the phone is fantastic and irons out all the wrinkles of the original n95. This phone may not be everyone's cup of tea, but being objective, I just can't see how anyone could not be impressed with its range of features and usability.
P.S I'm not an SE hater, I really couldn't give a stuff who manufacters the phones I buy anymore...I'm after the best phone I can get, end of.

if only the camera of the e51 is better i would have upgraded to the e51. the n95 and n82 phones are just too expensive for me. |

Buying a Nokia just because SE Currently does not have anything to offer to a user who needs some features does not qualify him as an SE hater. I've been waiting for the last 3 years for a phone from SE That can replace my S60 devices. I know they will deliver. Waiting till then. I still am an SE fan.. But as of now, nothing from them that can force me to switch.

Thanks for all the possitive comments. I haven't turned into an SE hater. I've just moved on to what is probably the only Nokia that interested me. I was keen on the N82 until I saw it - all that silver must be prone to wearing out quickly.
I've done some photo testing tonight (mainly short distance shots) and have to say that the camera definately out performs the K800. I ran tests on the N95 at both 5mp and 3mp and in all cases the photos from the N95 were (in my opinion) better. The photos are better focused, not washed out and most importantly they don't suffer from the aliasing issues that have bugged me so much with K800. I never really used the flash much on the K800 and when I did It would be too strong for close up shots or result in dark looking images. However, I will miss the ability to use the flash at night to take clear pictures of moving objects - I was really impressed with how well the K800 did this.
I think Nokia must have done some work on the camera because I haven't seen evidence of the heavy compression that was visible in early N95's. I won't bore anyone with photos - I'm sure everyone has seen enough comparisons.
Before I consider coming back to SE I would like to see SE improve speaker volume and give us a new user interface. I do find it ironic that the 8mp C905 was announced a couple of days after I got my N95 - but looking at early reports I'm happy to stick with my decission. To me the c905 whiile looking very nice is just the same thing with a better camera. I must say it looks like a very good camera - This is a good sign of what will be around when I next upgrade.
So, I'm happy with my choice. I've only posted this because I hope others might be interested in my experience. Each to their own - Mobile phones are a very personal thing and what suits one person might not suit another. What I have learnt is not to judge phones so much without actually getting to use them properly.

congratulations on your magnificent purchase..!! i was first with nokia and got a 3230 (which i still have) and then switched to SE (now a w810i), but i guess i would be switching back to nokia, for all the new phones with features that come with it..!! hoping that SE comes out with something solid..!! |

I'm with phones from a LONG time ago... I see them OK. Their features and etc, so I'm sticking with for now
Anyway, the K800's great specification is it's camera speed. The speed it takes the picture. It could easily capture a working fan at full speed
