I don't know about the price but the 300D is very good. But you need an external flash (Speedlite) as the builtin is a bit weak and mounted too close to the lens (red eyes).

I have a 300D and am very pleased with it. It may be a couple of years old but it produces much better shots than many point and shoots, imho a good choice of camera.
