Hi all

it is time to upgrade my new phone, and it's GPS time , but i have a doubt picking my new phone.

the c702 comes with a build-in a-gps module, and google maps build in. This is great because i have an unlimited data plan here in the netherlands, and i can use the phone for actual navigation!.

the problem is that when i leave the netherlands for the holliday or so, the actual map data is still downloaded, and GPRS/UMTS data in a foreign countrys is the opposite of cheap.

so is there a an so called "on-board" navigation software for the c702, which contains all the maps of, for example, europe or the benelux, without downloading the actual map data? something like the popular tom-tom software?

if there is no sush software for the c702, does this software exists for the UIQ platform? (so i can wait for the p5i/paris, which will probaly released in september)

and is there a way to use the c702 as a GPS module, so that i can install tom-tom on my PDA, and enjoy cheap navigation?

thanx in advance for the help!

So far, I have not come across any complete onboard navigation for the C702, with Mobile G maps I think there is a way to "make" your own maps and store it on the phone, donīt know for sure.
Another navigation app is Amaze GPS (freeware) , it works fine with the C702, but is depending of downloading data all the time, but I think they are working on a onboard solution, at least they should do, and then Wayfinder is history
http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php
For smartphones there is onboard navigation availble like tom tom and others.
Canīt tell you if you can use the C702 as a GPS module, but in the GPS settings menu you have the option to allow external devices to share your position(always allow, always ask, always reject), so maybe itīs possible

thnx for the tip on amAze i found this:

Economy mode
If you want to limit the amount of data consumed during navigation, you should use the default arrows mode. In this mode only the calculated route is sent to the phone. It is typically only up to 10 - 20 Kbytes of data for in-city routes. Once the route is stored in the phone and as long as you are on-track, you do not need to have data communication with the network. The local software will use this info to guide you with voice and arrows all the way to your destination. It is definitely the cheapest navigation system worldwide.

not perfect, but one step in the right direction

wayfinder navigator lets you download maps to the phone to save data,
what happens if someone calls while your navigating with your phone if you answer you might end up of track and lost
maybe its better to have a seperate nav system & seperate phone ?

thnx for the tip on wayfinder navigator

my guess is:
if the map is on the device, the route will be continued, and the call will be transfered to the speaker/headset.

if the map is not on the device, the route will be continued on a blank screen, or maybe even without directions for as long as you make the call. the call itself will be on the speaker/headset.

so it is propbaly a must to have the entire map on the phone, which cant be hard, since i can buy a 2gb memorystick micro for cheap.

For UIQ3, G900 for example, there are several choices for what you want (gps apps with downloadable maps):

TomTom
Garmin
Sygic Drive

Also, i was told Wayfinder will also have downloadable maps for UIQ3

Ive realised from personal experince that unless am driving in a foreign country, the GPS module is rarely used, since in most places its faster to ask ppl directions!

I would love an inbuilt GPS module which doesnt rely much/not at all, on GPRS too, but havent found one.

As for the C702 it looks like the best travelling companion with its dust n splash proofing. Inbuilt GPS with it would be the obvious (but missing ) feature from SE.

i think you mean an on-board solution (so it contains all the maps), right? since the c702 contains a aGPS module

The on-board part is not a must have for me, IF i can use my PDA as a tom-tom screen, and the c702 as a GPS module.

Does anybody know if this is possible?
