Thousands of Telstra mobile phone users had their voice calls cut off on Saturday after a telecoms cable was cut in central Australia. The disruption lasted all morning until around mid-afternoon although SMS traffic was unaffected.
Telstra spokeswoman Jane De Gault told local media that it seemed that a cable was cut in the Alice Springs area. The company prioritized repairs and would try to seek out the cause of the breakage later.
"It may have been that there was a contractor, someone's contractor, has cut the cable and that's often the case," she said.
