I diy more wallpapers,but t68 display only 256 colors,so...
which is your choice,gif or jpg?

gif.. smaller size, thus more
plus they can be animated which is a ++

I believe Jpeg is better as it takes less space at 256 colours it is sufficent!

.gif is definitly the best.

You couldn't do http://www.jalu.co.uk/pictures/christmascard.gif as a .jpg for one!

gif is the best form for compression for a color picture..
thus it's smaller

as far as compression goes, gifs are better for pics made up of solid areas of colour (logos, for instance) and jpgs are better for photos.

Thats strange, cause i observed that when making own background picture and converting gif->jpg and jpg->gif, gif is in my case at least 2X bigger.
