In theory yes............during the install you will be able to select the destination drive for the installation eg the size etc, if your D drive is free then install there, ideally with at least 8 gig free! The ubuntu setup should then put the new boot options in the MBR (master boot record) in the root of your C drive (you might have to select this) so when you restart you can select from windows or ubuntu from a list.

burn a cd and pop it into youre drive to check the compatibility with hardware (select "try ubuntu without any change to your computer" this will take you into the live cd mode )

ubuntu 8.04 is reeeeely easy to install.... just follow the onscreen instructions from the live cd... to create the partitions theres an easy to use graphical selector which you drag to select how much you would like youre partitions set up

defrag youre windows drive first

Yeah ok, this is anything but easy to install. I downloaded the .iso, burnt it, ran the CD (the windows installer). The other .exe gives me a "invalid CD error".
So i choose the partitions etc etc and it starts downloading the 700MB file again!!!! I have the latest version so why is it downloading 700 again?

And it gave me to option to try it before installing it, which i want to do before i go ahead.

Boot from the CD/DVD...

Stick it in, restart, and hit whatever you need to hit on Windows to let you choose where to boot from.

yeah, doing what airien said should take you to this screen (after choosing your language)

*will be slightly different in the latest hardy herron*

select the first option and you should have a nice clean linux desktop!#

click on the "install" icon on your desktop

follow the onscreen instructions (dont forget to change your partition sizes using the slider)

feel free to surf the net while it installs
