Thinking of using some of the flash memory space to transfer and swap some dvd's which I can convert to a mobile compatible format, but was wondering what format would be best to use with the W950?

Ie, *.3gp, *.mov, *.avi, etc? Which would give the best video/audio and smallest file?

if you want to watch them perfectly on the phone player...then:

convert to MP4 with this settings:

320x240 resolution
512 kbps (you can use higher but it's the best quality/size ratio--- i think)
96kbps stereo sound
30 frames per second

or you can convert to AVI DivX which you can play through programs like:
(Divx player - smart movie - power movie - core player (the best) )

I can recommend 3gp. It is a standard format alright, but it doesn't need any extra application and the quality is good. If you look for a good converter there is "acala 3gp converter free" that is really good.

hmm....the word 'free'.....

...one of my favourite words in the English Dictionary.

Is it a quick program to use? IE, is it fast converting a dvd into a 3gp format?

..coreplayer deals well with matroska containers, and has ogg support. *shrug* Might be an idea to take a look at doom9.org as well

just used Acala DVD 3GP Ripper, spend nearly 2 and a half hours ripping my Simpsons Dvd into 3gp, transferred to the phone.....

.....and the phone won't open it.

Suggestions?

NB, I did rip it to the computer in one lump - could that be the problem?

..haven't had that problem so far.. The player on the phone doesn't support h.264, so that might be it.

Try going here:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
And extract the files to a gspot folder. Then open it, open the export- settings. Hook on the "custom" format, and leave the rest. Open the 3gp file, and look in .. either the program folder, or the folder where the file is, for a file with the info. And post the info, maybe we'll learn something.

edit: m3 is a good program if you're ripping files.

..oh, and avi, mov, 3gp, mp4, and so on are container formats. They don't necessarily restrict the codec you're using to something that's perfect for a particular device. But using xvid (like m3 is using) is probably a good trade- off between compression and quality.

is there a player for the phone that will support that H.264 codec?

just trying M3 - and it worked for a few minutes, and then crashed.

[edit]

one of my mates at work said to try using iTunes to convert to dvd to mp4. can that work??

m3 works best with the ffdshow decoding filters (for reading the video, it uses another filter for coding/compression), so install those (and uninstall whatever other codec packs you have first). And it tends to hang up if you run out of space on the temp- drive. With a dvd- movie, you run out of space very fast, and so on. So set the tmp- dir to at least a partition you don't have a windows temp file on, for example. ..after that, it should run ok.

Coreplayer runs h.264. Only one - but it's through software only (not sure on their status for "hw"- support), so it won't necessarily run too smooth. Still - it's not too bad.. some frameskip for videos you get off google- video for the iPod/PSP, for example, but with good sound.

it's all sorted now.

Got hold of Coreplayer and tried my first dvd rip in it - and it played ok.

Not too impressed with quality of picture though - but that might be a combination of me trying to do things while the file is ripping and actual rip settings.

Shouldn't be a problem ripping in the background..unless maybe if you're ripping from the dvd, and have a disk on the same ide- channel (..hm.. can I recommend you a new OS as well? Sabayon linux, for example? ). ..In any case - somewhere around 300kbps video with 2-pass, 192kbps sound and so on, in 320x200 - that's overkill on such a small screen... But it should look pretty good.

Example.. that's "UIQ safe" settings, I think, in m3.

Btw, if you're using the 1.2.0 version of coreplayer - I think something was done with the filter that made everything look grainy. It's gone again now, on the last version, for some reason.

The best of the best is
3gp extention
mp4 codec
1500 bitrate for video
128 bitrate for audio
320X240 resolution

I watch full movies and episodes on my P990 and it work amazingly perfect with the default video player I swear is just like watching DVD on lcd tv

if u want i can give u a sample of the videos that i download on my mobile

Any of you faced a problem while converting it to playable format?
I had converted Blood diamond to fit the screen , it plays for about 5 minutes and just hangs.

I've finally settled on a dvd ripper, I've got one called Magic DVD Ripper (very imaginatively named).

Ripped Transformers into mp4 format, and transferred to phone.

Played in Coreplayer and I've got jerky picture playback but perfect sound.

Used the following settings:

******
MP4 [1]
Video: 320x240 - Normal Quality (600kbps) [2]
Audio: Very High (128kbps) [3]
Codec: MPEG4 [4]
******

I have the following options available:
[1] VCD/Mpeg1
SVCD/Mpeg2
AVI
MP4
PSP
Original Mpeg2
MP3

[2] Very Low (200kbps)
Low (400kbps)
Normal (600kbps)
High (800kbps)
Very High (1000kbps)

[3] Very Low (48kbps)
Low (64kbps)
Normal (80kbps)
High (96kbps)
Very High (128kbps)

[4] Mpeg4
AVC/H.264

Ideas on the best of those settings to use to get stutter free picture playback on the W950 in Coreplayer 1.2.0?
