mobileburn.com:

The Sony Ericsson W960 is a great looking smartphone with plenty of top-notch features to offer. However, the user interface and touch implementation make it difficult to get around, and frustrating to use. The Walkman music player and 8GB of internal storage are certainly tempting, but the dreadfully slow USB data transfers and lack of Genre support in the music player are hard to overlook. Also, while the camera application is zippy, the flash and other settings are extremely inconvenient to change, meaning it's only really good for point-and-shoot. Overall, I give the Sony Ericsson W960 a Not Recommended rating. There are plenty of other music-oriented smartphones with good cameras that don't give you a headache to use.

they reviewed a commercial unit mind you. and by now, FW should be stable.
its all because of that slow cpu that was tasked to handle files (massive files)
all the goodies of w960 imo were hampered by the slow processor..

"Dreadfully slow USB transfers" - HUH?!?!

The W960 is the fastest phone I have EVER used for transferring files via USB. I filled up 3 GB on its memory in only a little over 5 minutes! That's not slow at all.

Mobile Review also said that the W960 had a VERY fast USB transfer so im surprised Mobileburn say it's slow, they must have had a bad unit, i don't read their reviews anyway.

The reviewer was using SE's Media Mgr sw to transfer the files, which in turn uses the (slow) USB media transfer protocol.

Other reviewers (and users here) were/are using the mass storage, full High Speed USB 2.0 protocol which is undisputably much, much faster.

There's absolutely no need to use SE's Media Mgr to transfer files (unless you need to recompress your music during the transfer - but why would you?!). Use it to organize, rank and/or add Sense Me data to your music (mobile does not need to be tethered). Then tether the mobile using the mass storage option to move your music quickly over to the mobile memory.

A sloppy bit of oversight on the reviewer's part IMHO.

And re. the 6 key presses to get to the flash setting, one press of the '*' will toggle flash on/off in the camera app. Other camera app shortcuts (increase/decrease brightness, hide/show icons, frame size, AF on/off, and Night Mode on/off) can be seen/hidden by pressing the '0' key.

Another sloppy bit of oversight on the reviewer's part. Again, IMHO.

And if I'm not mistaken (sold my N95 long ago), using the Active Toolbar in the N95 camera app would still require a min 5 or 6 key presses to toggle the flash on/off. Don't seem to recall many reviewers making any brouhaha about that.

Activating flash difficult, huh?

As in most SE phones, pressing * activates the flash, 7 activates night mode, 4 changes focus mode & 1 changes picture size. The only 'simpler' alternative that can implement is a thought-reader.

Ofcourse as everyone has mentioned, data transfer speeds are the fastest among all devices.

As an about-to-be former W960i owner I can agree with the UI and touch criticisms but slow USB transfers?! The speed of transferring files was incredible. I was amazed the first time I used the Media Manager to copy 4GB of music, it was faster than any other SE phone and even many iPods!

Also, the camera was simple to use. It was a K800-quality camera in a smartphone and was easy to operate using the keypad to switch the different modes.

Laughable comments from MobileBurn there!!!

if the claims of the reviewer are baseless (according to the testimonies of w960 users here), how come mobileburn posted a review like that? haven't they checked if the unit they reviewed is faulty?

imo the mobileburn review is condemnable. because it is over acting.
giving a NOT RECOMMENDED rating is super exagerrated.
it gives those uninformed people out there the notion that released a garbage in the form of w960...

I got to use my friend's w960 and boy is it so cool! Its the most visully stimulating walkman ive used. The eye candies are nice. The loudspeaker output is strong and with bass elements. The camera is fast and takes excellent snaps. Plus multi tasking is a breeze.

I agree, totally rate this phone

Megabass is awesome, texting with the stylus is easy and fast as hell

a few firmware glitches when you have multiple applications/texting/walkman open

especially using the walkman and trying to text at the same time, pretty slow and jerky

these are the only complaints I have overall, damn good phone in my experience

Only issue I had was audio volume using my HPM-82s but since applying the sound mod its near exact to my ipod 5.5g!

Love this phone. I have a K850 and W890 sitting on the shelf waiting for me to get bored with it, plus I have a c902 winging its way to me so will give that a blast too.
